The comedian and actor Richard Belzer best known as Detective John Munch on the “Law & Order” franchise had passed away at the age of 78 and Bill Scheft, a longtime family friend confirmed to CBS News on Sunday that Richard Belzer died.

Scheft reported that Belzer died in the southern French town of Beaulieu-sur-Mer surrounded by loved ones. He shared the Tweet after the death of Richard:

Many celebs pay tribute to him after hearing the news of his death. Comedian and original SNL cast member Laraine Newman tweeted, “I loved this guy so much.

Mariska Hargitay, Belzer’s former co-star on Law & Order: SVU, posted on Instagram, “My sincere condolences, my dear friend. I’ll miss your special brilliance and the way you saw the world.”

Belzer, a popular stand-up comedian made his acting debut in “The Groove Tube” in 1974. Belzer’s most notable role was that of Detective John Munch on “Homicide: Life on the Street” from 1993 to 1999. Belzer reprised the role on the first episode of “Law & Order” in 1993.
