A white supremacist who killed 10 black people in a supermarket in Buffalo, New York last year has been sentenced to life in prison in a dramatic court hearing. Payton Gendron admitted guilt on all 25 charges against him including first-degree murder and acts of hate terrorism.
A family member rushed towards the killer before Wednesday (Feb 15, 2023) and had to be restrained by security. There were also emotional impact statements from other family members.
Barbara Massey whose sister was killed by the Supremacist said to the gunman:
You are going to come to our city and decide you don’t like black people. Man, you don’t know a damn thing about black people. We’re human.
One victim’s mother testifies in court that her injured son Zaire Goodman feels guilty about surviving the attack. It’s the kind of pain that I, as a mother simply can’t handle, but he’s dealing with it. On that fateful day, the terrorist decided that the life of a black person was not worth saving.
Geraldine Talley, a family member of Brian Talley’s was killed in the attack. He said:
I forgive you, but I forgive you not for your sake, but for mine and for this black community. All of the 10 people killed were black. Three others were wounded.
Wayne Jones, the son of a victim, Celestine Chaney said to the killer:
You’ve been brainwashed. You don’t even know black people that much to hate them. You learned this on the internet. I hope you find it in your heart to apologize to these people, man. You did wrong for no reason.
As reported by investigators, the shooter studied up on Buffalo’s racial demographics before carrying out his attack, despite the city being over 300 kilometers (190 miles) from his home in Conklin, New York. After writing online about how other racially motivated shootings served as inspiration, the shooter wore bulletproof body armor and streamed the attack on Tops Friendly Market on May 14, 2022.

However, in his Wednesday(Feb 15, 2023) court appearance, he cautioned against imitative shootings. This statement was made by the gunman, who is not eligible for parole:
Because of their race, I opened fire and killed several people. I can’t believe I went through with it, now that I think about it. Because of what I read online, I acted hatefully. I regret what I did even though I know I can’t undo it and I certainly don’t want anyone to take their own life as inspiration from my example.
Judge Susan Eagan said:
There can be no mercy for you, no understanding, no second chances.
Although the death penalty is now illegal in the state of New York, federal prosecutors may pursue it on hate crime and domestic terrorism charges to which the alleged shooter has pleaded not guilty.
