A Brazilian lawyer was killed when an MRI machine accidentally discharged the revolver he was carrying. As reported by The Telegraph, 40-year-old Leandro Mathias de Novaes carried a rifle into Laboratorio Cura in Sao Paulo this month while accompanying his mother to an appointment, despite being warned to leave all metallic things outside.
According to CNN Brazil and Folha De S.Paulo, the gun was yanked from his belt by the MRI machine’s magnetic field, triggering the shooting.
Scans of organs and tissues using MRI technology can detect damage that x-rays miss. The Mayo Clinic states that it utilizes a magnetic field and radio waves generated by a computer to produce high-resolution photographs of the body.

“We would like to emphasize that all accident prevention protocols were followed by the Cura team, as is customary in all units,” they explained.
According to The Telegraph and New York Post, Mathias had over 8,000 followers on a TikTok account where he uploaded pro-gun content before the incident. According to CNN Brazil, Mathias’s TikTok videos have garnered nearly 50,000 likes. The Post reports that police have determined that the gun used in the incident last month belongs to Mathias.
