After finishing his degree in Oregon, Knight enlisted in the United States Army and spent the next eight years there, first as a regular soldier and later as a member of the Army Reserve. After his military service was complete, Knight attended and graduated from the Standard Graduate School of Business with a master’s degree in business administration in 1962.
While on a post-graduation tour around Japan, he happened onto the Kobe, Japan factory of Onitsuka Co., where he purchased a pair of Tiger brand running shoes. He was so amazed by the shoes’ high quality and affordable price that he managed to arrange a meeting with Mr. Onitsuka. Thus, he was able to acquire Tiger’s western United States distribution rights.
