During the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, Steve Lacy and Thundercat stunned the audience with a performance of “Bad Habit.” Performers including Beyoncé, Doja Cat and Kendrick Lamar were clearly feeling Lacy’s set, with the latter having worked with Lacy on the track “PRIDE” from Lamar’s fourth studio album, DAMN.
In addition to becoming the singer-songwriter and musician’s first No. 1 Billboard hit, “Bad Habit” became viral on TikTok.

Lacy explained the inspiration behind Gemini Rights and its title track, “Bad Habit,” in a June 2017 interview with GQ.
“[‘Bad Habit’] was the start of this renaissance of the separation between that Steve and this Steve,” he said. “Prior to this moment, I felt like I was in a slump. I had a bunch of dope ideas, but my writing? I didn’t know how I was going to approach this record. But I feel like this song was the one that was like okay, this is what we’re about to do.”
Lacy’s second album, Gemini Rights, won the Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album earlier in the evening. In 2020, when the prize was known as Best Urban Contemporary Album, Apollo XXI, Lacy’s debut album, was nominated.

Lacy’s “Bad Habit” was nominated for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance, in addition to Best Progressive R&B Album. Tank and the Bangas’ “Red Balloon,” as well as those by Terrace Martin’s “Drones,” “Moonchild” “Starfruit,” and “Cory Henry,” were also up for “Best Progressive R&B Album” (Operation Funk).
Gemini Rights sold 34,000 equivalent units in its first week, placing it at No. 7 on the US Billboard 200. Singles for Gemini Rights included “Mercury” and “Sunshine,” both of which featured Fousheé. Lacy and Fousheé went on their Give You the World Tour last year. This summer, they will embark on a 12-city RE: SET Tour with Toro y Moi and James Blake.
