There will be no further chapters in Alfred Pennyworth’s backstory. Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler, which airs on HBO Max, will not return for a fourth season.

After airing for two seasons on Epix, the show was picked up by the streaming service for a third. The third season of the DC origin series started on the streaming service in October and aired for ten episodes through the end of November.

In light of the recent unveiling of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s concept for the Warner Bros. Discovery comic book studio division, where Pennyworth was noticeably absent, this comes as no surprise. Similar DC shows on the streaming service, like Titans and Doom Patrol, are also terminating after their fourth seasons.

In the 1960s, a young Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge), who would later become Bruce Wayne’s father, hires Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon), a former British SAS soldier, to head up his security firm. Official confirmation of Pennyworth’s cancellation after three seasons can be found in the tweet below:

In addition to Emma Paetz, Paloma Faith, Ryan Fletcher, Dorothy Atkinson, Ramon Tikaram, Harriet Slater, and Simon Manyonda appeared in episodes throughout Season 3. Season 3 picks up five years after the end of Season 2, during which a cultural revolution ushers in a new era of superheroes and supervillains.

The drama series from Warner Bros. Television is based on DC characters co-created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger and is executive produced by Bruno Heller, Matthew Patnick, Danny Cannon, and John Stephens.

“While HBO Max is not moving forward with another season of Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler, we are very thankful to creator Bruno Heller and executive producers Matthew Patnick, Danny Cannon and John Stephens, along with Warner Bros. Television, for their brilliant, unique, gripping depiction of the origin of Alfred Pennyworth, one of the most iconic characters in the Batman world,” said an HBO Max spokesperson.

“An incredible blend of action, drama and humor, for three seasons, Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler has taken fans on a mind-bending ride into Alfred’s eccentric world and the beginnings of cutting-edge super heroes and super villains.”

On the small screen, Gunn and Safran have revealed that they are working on an animated series called Creature Commandos, a live-action spinoff of Peacemaker called Waller starring Viola Davis, a Lanterns series, a Booster Gold series, and a Paradise Lost series.
