The 747 Jumbo Jet has finally taken to the skies after more than 50 years of production. On Tuesday, Boeing handed over the final 747 to Atlas Air. John Travolta, an avid aviator was on board and deemed it the most well-thought-out and safest aircraft ever built.
Richard Branson, lamenting the high fuel costs for transatlantic flights on the jumbo jet, said “farewell to a wonderful beast” in a Reuters interview. The Boeing 747 was produced by Boeing Commercial Airplanes in the United States from 1968 to 2023.
Boeing has delivered 1,574 models and logged more than 118 million flight hours around the world. Pan American Airways, a willing customer placed an order for 25 of these planes in April 1966.
As a result of the new twin-aisle layout, the price per seat dropped and the number of passengers that could be accommodated was increased by 50 percent.
