Who is Namor: The Villain of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever?

Norway MartinBy Norway MartinFebruary 2, 2023No Comments4 Mins Read

Soon the attention will be on Namor, the Sub-Mariner, played by Tenoch Huerta (Sin Nombre, The Forever Purge), the antagonist of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Despite being one of Marvel’s oldest characters, Namor has never before appeared in a Marvel movie.

There aren’t many specifics about the undersea king in the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever teaser. We know that he goes by another name in the movie, K’ul’ku’kan, which means “the feathered serpent god,” and that, unlike his comic book counterpart, he hails from Talokan. Meso-American culture rather than Atlantis influenced this fictional oceanic paradise. You can read all details about Namor below.

Who is Namor?

Before the MCU or Black Panther 2 were even considered, Namor made his debut. Marvel Comics #1, released in August 1939, featured Namor for the first time. Legendary author and illustrator Bill Everett was responsible for creating him; roughly 25 years later, he collaborated with Stan Lee to develop Daredevil.

The first Human Torch, frequently Namor’s foe and ally, was also introduced in that issue. As a result, Namor and the Torch are the first superheroes in Marvel Comics, arriving a full year before Captain America.

Namor can breathe underwater like an Atlantean, although his skin is not blue like theirs. He has telepathic power over marine life and even his army. He is 10 times stronger than any Atlantean or human. He can fly, unlike Atlanteans or humans, because of the wings on his feet.

He rejected that part of his heritage because Atlanteans had raised him and he didn’t regard himself as human. However, as a youngster, Namor experienced prejudice from other Atlanteans due to his non-blue complexion, which left him with a significant chip on his shoulder.

Together with the appropriate mindset. In this situation, he was only with his cousin Namora. She also had a mixed ancestry, which helped Namor feel less isolated. Although we don’t know much about her specific role in Black Panther 2, an MCU version of Namora will also appear with Namor in the sequel.

What Are Namor’s Powers?

The King of Atlantis and master of the seas is Namor, also referred to as the Sub-Mariner. Namor’s exceptional parents were the reason he was born with his abilities. His mother was an Atlantean princess named Fen, and his father was an adventurer dispatched by Woodrow Wilson to the Antarctic to look into the disappearance of Sir Ernest Shackleton (who had been sent on a quest for vibranium by Winston Churchill).

As one might anticipate from a seafaring hero, Namor can communicate with and command marine life, breathe underwater, and swim easily. In certain forms, he can even telekinetically control water and cure himself while submerged. Namor can also battle well on the ground thanks to his incredible strength and quickness.

Is Namor a Villain?

Not, but also… yes? Above all else, Namor is complex. As you might anticipate from a character conceived in 1939—many years before most of the heroes who now rule the MCU—Namor has had the opportunity to play both the hero and the villain.

He appears to be positioned as the antagonist in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever because later previews show him as an open menace who has a grudge towards the surface world, especially Wakanda. Namor swore to exact revenge on the surface world for nuclearly destroying a portion of Atlantis in one of his most wicked comic book scenes.

So is Namor a Mutant?

He is! Given that he derives his abilities from a genetic combination of human and Atlantean DNA, he is frequently referred to as Marvel’s first mutant. As we’ve already mentioned, Namor has a lengthy and intricate comic history, and his mutant condition often plays a significant part in both the X-Men storylines and the larger Marvel universe.

This seems to set up some intriguing possible stories for the MCU’s upcoming films, especially with the recent revelation of Ms. Marvel’s status as a mutant. But because all we’ve seen so far are a few brief hints at Namor’s function in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, we’ll have to wait to find out what more significant role he might have.
