Storms begin forming around Florida in mid-May far before the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season on June 1 though recent years have been an exception for the Sunshine State. The National Hurricane Center has released its initial 2022 tropical weather forecast.

When is Hurricane Season in Florida in 2023?

When hurricane season rolls around in the United States, no state is more at risk than the Sunshine State. In the United States, 301 storms have made landfall since 1851 with 120 of those hitting Florida. This is nearly twice as many as the number of hurricanes that have impacted Texas, the next most vulnerable state.

With 1,350 miles of coastline along the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, Floridians must take special precautions during hurricane season. This includes formulating a plan for what to do in the event of an emergency, strengthening your home and getting flood and homeowner’s insurance.

Florida is most at risk for a hurricane hitting land between the middle of August and the end of October, while hurricanes can occur at any time during hurricane season. The 10th of September is the official height of hurricane season. One of the most respected hurricane forecasting teams, Tropical Storm Risk projects a hurricane season in 2023 that is 15% below the 30-year average.

The most hurricanes have hit Monroe County in southwestern Florida, followed by Miami-Dade and Broward Counties in the state’s northeastern corner. It is estimated that four to six feet of water accumulated in Miami-Dade County as a result of Hurricane Irma in 2017.

The Sunshine State’s central coast is hit by fewer hurricanes than any other part of the state. If you keep heading northwest towards the Panhandle, you’ll once again be in the hurricane area. There have been 66 hurricanes registered in the Florida Panhandle with 14 of those being Category 3, 4 or 5 storms.
