A few unfortunate incidents are still occurring here and there as we near the end of this month. There was too much of a lag between December and January, and the constant stream of death announcements was getting old. The death of 31-year-old Internet personality Kyle Smaine in an avalanche was another piece of the tragic news that spread throughout the weekend.

We, too, were shocked to learn of the athlete’s passing and offer our condolences to his or her loved ones. Find out what killed skier Kyle Smaine and reflect on his life in the article that follows.

Smaine has been very busy on his Instagram account over the past several days, sharing photos and videos from his vacation to Japan. He hasn’t updated in roughly two days because he’s been away skiing in Nagano. The “unbelievable snow quality,” the skier gushed, is what keeps him coming back to Japan every winter.

It’s tragic that someone can bring such joy into your life and then leave you so soon. The snow, more precisely an avalanche, was (possibly) Kyle Smaine’s favorite element to ski on, and it was also the cause of his death.

Avalanches had buried Kyle Smaine and another individual, whose identities were not known. The tragedy happened in the central Japanese mountains. Avalanche warnings were issued that day, according to the authorities, because of the severe snowfall.
