Actress Cindy Williams, well remembered for her role as Laverne to Shirley on the classic 1970s sitcom, has died at the age of 75. The news of Williams’ death was announced on Monday night, but her family later released a statement revealing that she had actually passed away the previous Wednesday. (as per En As)

Starred in American Graffiti, directed by George Lucas in 1973 and became a household name afterward; the following year, she starred in Francis Ford Coppola’s critically acclaimed picture The Conversation, which furthered her reputation.

The statement, on behalf of her children Zak and Emily Hudson, read in part, “The passing of our kind, hilarious mother, Cindy Williams, has brought us insurmountable sadness that could never truly be expressed. Knowing and loving her has been our joy and privilege. She was one of a kind, beautiful, generous and possessed a brilliant sense of humor and a glittering spirit that everyone loved.”

But it was on the Happy Days spinoff Laverne & Shirley, which ran from 1976 to 1983, that she finally became a household name. In a sitcom about two women who shared an apartment and worked at a brewery in Milwaukee in the 1950s, Williams played the more conventional Shirley Feeney to Penny Marshall’s more outgoing Laverne DiFazio. According to Williams’s family Cindy who had been battling an unnamed illness passed away at her home on January 25.

She met Marshall’s brother, producer Gary Marshall, for an audition for the role of Princess Leia in Star Wars, and he had her skipping down the sidewalk while screaming, “Schlemiel! Schlimazel!
