In All Quiet on the Western Front, Felix Kammerer plays Paul Baumer, a German soldier of questionable age who along with his friends pretends to be older so that they can enlist in the First World War and achieve the fame and glory that they have been promised by propaganda.
The naive new recruits are confident in victory, but they fail to realize that countless soldiers have died before them and that they, too will be brutally killed or barely escape with their lives. The novel by Erich Maria Remarque with the same name was published in 1929, and it has been adapted into film twice before.
The 1930 version helmed by Lewis Milestone won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director. This is the first time a German filmmaker, acutely aware of the guilt and shame Germans associate with war has adapted the novel.
