When compared to the other surprises in this year’s Oscar nominations, Andrea Riseborough’s inclusion was the biggest. The Newcastle-born star was revealed as a surprise contender in the Best Actress category, after bagging her first-ever Oscar nomination on Tuesday afternoon, despite having virtually no awards buzz for her role in Leslie (a film that, if we’re being honest, most of us had probably not even heard of).
A number of well-known actors, such as Cate Blanchett and Gwyneth Paltrow (Gwyneth Paltrow Net Worth), had previously praised Andrea for her performance in the film, which many took as a grass-roots movement to win her an Oscar.
Reacting to the support she received on Tuesday evening, the Birdman actor admitted she was “not entirely sure how the fuck this happened”.
She told Deadline: “I’m astounded. It’s such an unexpected ray of light. It was so hard to believe it might ever happen because we really hadn’t been in the running for anything else. Even though we had a lot of support, the idea it might actually happen seemed so far away.”
Like Ana De Armas (for Blonde), Cate Blanchett (for Tár), Michelle Williams (for The Fabelmans) and Michelle Yeoh (Michelle Yeoh Speach at Golden Globe) (for Everything, Everywhere, All at Once), Andrea is up for Best Actress. The British performer, who had previously been nominated for a TV Bafta for her role in The Long Walk to Finchley, earned a SAG Award for her work in Birdman as part of the film’s Best Ensemble. She has also appeared in the movies Happy-Go-Lucky and Brighton Rock and the TV shows Black Mirror and National Treasure, as well as in the musical Matilda the Musical based on the books by Roald Dahl.
