Former South Carolina attorney Richard “Alex” Murdaugh, the subject of three state probes and a dozen lawsuits, will stand trial for double murder on Monday. Murdaugh was charged with the murders of his wife Maggie and son Paul in July. He was a member of a renowned family that had run the prosecutor’s office in Hampton County for over eighty years. The disbarred lawyer insists he did not kill his own family. The murders in June 2021 prompted authorities to look into two additional fatalities and possible criminal activity with Murdaugh going back over a decade.
In the midst of his legal troubles, Murdaugh was shot in what authorities say was an attempt at insurance fraud. Who is Alex Murdaugh?
According to the family history documented in From the Salkehatchie to the Savannah, Richard Alexander Murdaugh was the third of four children and the second son, born in May 1968 to Randolph Murdaugh III and Elizabeth “Libby” Alexander Murdaugh, a professional educator and subsequently school board chairperson. He followed in his older brother Randolph IV’s legal footsteps.
Murdaugh, known as “Alec” growing up and “Big Red” in later years by his wife’s friends, was the beneficiary of three generations’ worth of hardworking, successful lawyers and prosecutors. Growing up, he spent the cooler months of the year at the family’s riverside and beachside retreats and the cooler months of the year deep in the forests of the Lowcountry, exploring special hunting properties with his elders and their well-connected acquaintances.
