The man credited for disarming the California shooter had never seen a real gun before. Brandon Tsay was working late one Saturday night at the dance club his family owned and operated in Alhambra when he spotted one aimed squarely in his direction.
He was unaware that the same gunman was suspected of killing 11 people at another nightclub only minutes earlier. Mr. Tsay charged the man and managed to disarm him, preventing further catastrophe. Huu Can Tran, 72, was recognized by authorities as the shooter; he committed himself by shooting himself in a van.
It is one of the deadliest mass shootings in California’s history. Around Saturday night at 22:22 (Sunday am at 06:22 GMT), it started at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park, California, which is located around 11 kilometers (7 miles) east of Los Angeles.
The region which is home to a sizeable Asian population was in the midst of its annual Lunar New Year celebrations. Mr. Tsay faced the gunman about 30 minutes after the attack when he showed up at a second location, the Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio in the nearby town of Alhambra.

The assailant had his semiautomatic assault weapon trained on him as he was at his office close to the lobby. Mr. Tsay, a computer programmer, said he did not recognize the man on Good Morning America on ABC.
“It looked like he was looking for targets, people to harm. “Something came over him” and he knew he had to “disarm him otherwise everyone would have died”. “When I got the courage, I lunged at him with both my hands,” he said.
Mr. Tsay wrested the weapon from the man and cried, “Go, get the hell out of here!” as he pointed it at the fellow. Mr. Tsay stated that the man left after a few seconds and jogged to his van.
Initially, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna claimed that two persons had wrestled the gun away, but surveillance footage clearly demonstrates that it was only Mr. Tsay. After being closed on Sunday in the wake of the tragedy, the Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio will resume normal operations on Monday.
