According to a tweet from the Memphis Police Department’s verified account, five officers have been terminated in connection with the death of Tyre Nichols, who was taken into police custody earlier this month and later died in the hospital.
“The egregious nature of this incident is not a reflection of the good work our officers perform, with integrity every day,” Police chief Cerleyn “CJ” Davis said in a statement.

The chief stated that investigators conducting an internal assessment of the arrest determined that the officers had broken policies regarding the use of force, the obligation to intercede and the duty to offer aid.
According to a statement released by Nichols’ attorneys, Nichols’ family has expressed support for the dismissals.

We agree with Tyre’s family that the five policemen responsible for his death should be fired, and we support the Department’s decision to do so. Attorneys Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci have stated that this is the first step in getting justice for Tyre and his family. Because of this, “they must also be held guilty for robbing this guy of his life and his son of a father.”
The activities of the police are being investigated by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
“Due to the ongoing criminal investigation, the Memphis Police Association will not comment on the termination of officers in the Tyre Nichols case,” the union representing the officers said. “The citizens of Memphis, and more importantly, the family of Mr. Nichols deserve to know the complete account of the events leading up to his death and what may have contributed to it.”
A civil rights inquiry has also been launched by the Department of Justice and the FBI. On January 8, police said they had stopped a driver the day before for speeding. “As officers approached the driver of the vehicle, a dispute occurred, and the suspect fled the area on foot,” officials said in a statement shared on social media.

“Afterward, the suspect complained of having a shortness of breath, at which time an ambulance was called to the scene. The suspect was transported to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition,” officials said.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirmed the man’s death a few days later and identified him as Nichols.

Nichols’ cause of death and the extent of his injuries remain unknown. CNN has attempted to contact the coroner in Shelby County. On Tuesday, municipal authorities said the police department’s internal investigation will conclude and the body camera footage would be made public once the family had a chance to watch it.
