Crosby received a liver transplant in 1994 and the procedure was widely reported on because Phil Collins footed the bill. His celebrity status and history of drug and alcohol abuse made the news of his transplant controversial. Hepatitis C, which Crosby had for quite some time caused his liver problems.

To control his Type 2 diabetes, Crosby took insulin injections. At a concert in October 2008, Crosby revealed to the audience that he had lost 55 pounds (25 kg) due to his battles with the disease. He had looked much thinner in recent years.

Upon the recommendation of his physician, Crosby postponed the remaining dates of his solo tour in February 2014 so that he could have a cardiac catheterization and angiogram following the results of a routine cardiac stress test. His death shocked his many Twitter followers because he had been posting messages there as recently as Wednesday. Crosby in typical fashion made a lighthearted remark about heaven in one of his final tweets the day before he passed away writing, “I heard the place is overrated… cloudy.”

Graham Nash, Crosby’s former bandmate who had grown apart from him in recent years paid tribute to him on social media. Nash expressed his sadness over the loss of his friend David Crosby writing, “It is with deep and profound sadness that I learned of his passing.”
