A federal civil rights investigation was launched after the death of a man named Nichols in Memphis following a traffic stop. Tyre Nichols was arrested and hospitalized, but he passed away three days later. U.S. Attorney for Tennessee’s Western District Kevin G. Ritz has announced that the FBI and the Justice Department have opened a joint civil rights investigation into the recent death of a Memphis man following a confrontation with police.
What Actually Happened with the Man Who Died?
According to press releases from the Memphis Police Department and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, 29-year-old Nichols was pulled over on January 7 for allegedly reckless driving in Memphis. Police say that when they approached Nichols, he ran away prompting the officers to chase him down and eventually apprehend him.
Police said Nichols complained of being short of breath during his arrest and was subsequently hospitalized in critical condition where he remained until his death three days later. The official cause of Nichols’ death has not been disclosed.
“The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation, as stated publicly by state authorities. A civil rights investigation has also been launched by the United States Attorney’s Office in conjunction with the FBI Memphis Field Office and the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division”.

Following Nichols’ hospitalization, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office reportedly requested special agents investigate whether or not excessive force was used. There is currently no public access to body camera footage from the scene.
The District Attorney’s Office in Shelby County issued a statement pledging to be transparent. The appropriate authorities are being consulted in order to determine how soon the video can be released and it will be made available as soon as possible.
