HBO Max Cancels Gossip Girl Reboot After 2 Seasons

The new season of Gossip Girl will be it’s last. Season 2 of the revival will conclude on January 26; HBO Max has decided not to renew the show for a third season. Based on the best-selling books by Cecily von Ziegesar and the smash-hit CW series created by Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, Joshua Safran created the new Gossip Girl, which he also executive produced.

Thanks to showrunner/executive producer Joshua Safran, as well as Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz HBO Max, is able to return to the Upper East Side and all the controversies at Constance Billard. We appreciate them for the captivating love triangles, cunning backstabbing, and flawless fashion that Gossip Girl introduced to a whole new audience. Still we will not be renewing the show for a third season.

The sequel premiered to massive success in July 2021, becoming HBO Max’s most-watched original series premiere to that point. Prior to the November 2021 launch of Season 1B, the show was renewed for a second season. Fans of the first series helped generate a lot of buzz for the sequel, but it ultimately failed to achieve the same level of cultural relevance that the original series did on The CW from 2007 to 2012.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to say Gossip Girl will not be continuing on HBO Max,” Safran wrote to fans on Thursday morning. Thank you for watching, and please be sure to watch next Thursday’s conclusion to find out how everything ends. xoxo”

Safran, who worked on the CW show before directing the revival, has hinted that the Gossip Girl series may not be finished after all. To all the GG fans worldwide: a huge thank you. You were the impetus for our return, and who knows, maybe you’ll be the reason we cross paths again. “Much love,” he concluded his note.

Gossip Girl’s cancellation is not thought to be a financial one, but rather the result of the show failing to break out in the same way that HBO Max’s revival of another YA series, Pretty Little Liars, has.

A new set of New York City private school teenagers are the focus of Gossip Girl Season 2, just as they were in Season 1. The series delves into how much social media and New York City have evolved since its inception. The revival was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for its inclusive cast and LGBTQ+ narratives.

A few of the actors who have appeared on the show are Jordan Alexander, Eli Brown, Thomas Doherty, Tavi Gevinson, Emily Alyn Lind, Evan Mock, Zion Moreno, Whitney Peak, Savannah Lee Smith, Johnathan Fernandez, Adam Chanler-Berat, Todd Almond, Laura Benanti, Grace Duah and Megan Ferguson. Kristen Bell, who voiced the role in the first season, comes back for the sequel.

Fake Empire and Alloy Entertainment, along with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios, are responsible for creating Gossip Girl. Safran of Random Acts is responsible for the writing, executive producing, and overall show creation. Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo of Alloy Entertainment, as well as Schwartz and Savage of Fake Empire, serve as executive producers. Producer Lis Rowinski of Fake Empire is also involved in the production process.
