On Thursday Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum stated that over 6,000 members of the national guard will be deployed to metro stations and “other institutions” in the capital city in response to a series of “strange situations.”
After a series of “atypical” events Sheinbaum a leading candidate for the ruling Morena party in Mexico’s 2024 presidential election, announced on Wednesday that she had asked President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador for the help of the guard, a militarized police force.
A woman was killed and 57 people were hurt on the 7th of January when a train derailed. The incident happened after a train overpass between two stations collapsed in May of 2021, killing twenty-six people.

According to the mayor, a close supporter of the president, another incident occurred at another station on the day of the collision, another the next day, and another on Wednesday involving a train car that had been serviced the day before.
During Lopez Obrador’s routine news conference, Sheinbaum remarked, “There are anomalous behaviors, moments and events occurring in the metro.”
“Every investigation must be carried out,” Sheinbaum replied when asked if it was sabotage. There is “the potential for provocation,” the president said, referring to an accident. Sheinbaum has stated that the National Guard personnel will be stationed in the metro for a period of many months to aid in surveillance and security.
Mexico City’s metro system is North America’s second-largest, after New York City’s. Lopez Obrador has expanded the purview of the Army into civilian spheres despite Congress’s 2017 decision to place the National Guard under its command.
