The novelist contrasted writing for an audience with writing for oneself in a 2012 interview with NPR. Additionally, he mentioned that when they were writing Agassi’s biography they have been through a lot together we started off by having a wonderful in-depth conversation about his life.

It's definitely worth noting that IN THE BOOK when Harry talks about the Xbox (which hadn't been released yet in 1997) he explicitly states that he has no idea if this particular memory is true and explains that his mother's death messed with his memories. https://t.co/aX0P4JeC6f

It had the same therapeutic effect. Andre was sitting on a couch and I was in an upright chair with a pad in my lap as we talked about his life and tried to uncover any underlying themes or patterns. He told NPR that his method for writing Agassi’s Open was mirror images of each other’s processes. But they seem very simpatico because he tried to inhabit their skin while writing in the first person despite thinking in the third person.
