Jack Ryan Season 3 Ending Explained

Jack Ryan Season 3 Ending Explained: In the penultimate episode of the season, CIA agent Jack Ryan (John Krasinski) and his team finally closed in on the bad guys after spending the previous seven episodes stumbling around Europe trying to avert a potential World War III.

Jack had to determine who wanted to use the missile and why after learning that a long-ago Russian nuclear missile project wasn’t nearly as abandoned as everyone had assumed.

Jack discovered that Russian defense minister Alexei Petrov (Alexej Manvelov) was plotting a coup against his president that involved sending Russian and American ships on a deadly course toward one another with the assistance of senior Russian intelligence officer Luka Gocharov (James Cosmo), who was making up for killing off a lot of nuclear scientists in his younger days.

It was up to Jack and Gocharov, along with CIA agent James Greer (Wendell Pierce), assassin Mike November (Michael Kelly), and Czech Republic President Alena Kovac (Nina Hoss), whose father was a part of Petrov’s plot, to prevent any missiles from being fired that would start a war between the East and the West. How did things turn out?

Jack Ryan Season 3 Ending Explained

Jack runs through the bush and avoids soldiers at the Estonian/Russian border in the show’s opening scene before getting picked up by a US helicopter (how the Russians fail to notice the chopper flying around is anyone’s guess).

To inform the captain of the coup and persuade him not to open fire on any potential Russian warships that may be passing by, Jack requests to be dropped onto the USS Roosevelt. This US military ship is patrolling the Baltic Sea.

The Roosevelt’s captain, however, forbids the unauthorized helicopter from landing, so one of the crew members throws Jack into the water, knowing that the Roosevelt is obligated to pick him up.

In the meantime, Gocharov travels to Fearless, the Russian ship outfitted with weaponry that is a critical component of Petrov’s scheme, in the Russian port of Kronstadt. Captain Antonov (Derek de Lint), a supporter of Petrov who, surprise, surprise, is happy to fire guns at just about anyone if it means restoring Russia to the magnificent, terrifying force he believes it once was, throws Gocharov in the brig as he boards the ship.

Jack Ryan Season 3 Ending Explained

Plans are in motion everywhere in Moscow. Petrov is in a room persuading other ministers to vote to remove his boss from office, Greer, Mike, and Czech president Kovac are on a covert mission in the tunnels beneath the Kremlin, and President Surikov (Mikhail Safronov) is furious upon learning that Petrov has gone rogue and ordered Fearless to set sail in the Baltic.

Mike and Kovac are hoping to get close to Surikov to let him know a coup is underway by sneaking into the building unofficially, while Greer plans to buy them and Jack some time by getting caught in the tunnels and then asking to speak to Petrov. Kovac looks pretty good considering she watched her father die and escaped bad guys by plunging into a freezing lake just a few days ago.

The USS Roosevelt and the Russian ship Fearless are on a collision course and will fire on each other if Jack can’t persuade the captain of the Roosevelt to defy procedure and not return fire if attacked. Jack, bless him, seems to have paused for a snack or bathroom break in weeks.

To confront Captain Antonov, Gocharov needs time to persuade his guard, XO Kagansky (Charlie Field), to let him from Fearless’s brig. Unfortunately, Antonov had already fired, and Roosevelt’s defense systems successfully intercepted his missile. It is unlikely that they will have the same good fortune again.

Mike and Czech President Kovac manage to see President Surikov while Greer speaks with Petrov, and they play him a tape demonstrating Petrov was scheming against him. Surikov summons Petrov, but when he realizes he could be in serious trouble, the traitor tries to find a way out before being shot dead by Surikov’s men.

With that, there are now two bad guys left. Gocharov is freed from the Fearless brig and goes with Kagansky to the control room to confront Antonov as Surikov tells his ministers about the coup and that he knows some of them voted for him to be removed, making all of them appear sheepish and in need of a change of underwear.

He says to Antonov, “No one needs to die today,” and then takes over, removing the treacherous captain from command and commanding the crew to turn the ship back towards Russia. Phew. Once Greer has been let out of the Kremlin, she waits outside to meet Mike and Kovac. It appears that the problem has been resolved, and everything will finish happily… or will it?

A week later, Greer and Jack get medals of honor from Elizabeth Wright (Betty Gabriel), Jack’s former CIA ally who is now a Director (they just prevented nuclear war; let’s hope they also receive a flashy automobile and some cash compensation).

President Kovac is secure at his residence in the Czech Republic, while Mike is lounging around the world while he waits for his subsequent illegal employment. When someone knocks on his door, it is apparent from the look on his face that Gocharov has been anticipating the guest. The nervous-looking man on the other side of the door hears him calmly reply, “Do not worry. I will not make things difficult.”

The former Russian intelligence officer is last seen being taken to a car as the pair departs. We can only speculate about whether Gocharov has been driven to death as Jack and Greer leave the CIA building holding their brand-new medals and watch the closing credits roll while wondering why the CIA didn’t get him out of Russia and to safety in appreciation for everything he did to save the day.

Closing

Both ships stand down, disengage, and war is averted. The final scene shows Ryan and Greer being awarded medals for their bravery by a new head of the CIA, Elizabeth Wright, who vouched for them when it mattered most.
