Most Rushing TDS in a Season: Jamaal Williams, a former BYU Cougars running back, surpassed the famous Barry Sanders to set a new Detroit Lions single-season record for touchdowns. On January 8, Williams’ former group, the Green Bay Packers, hosted the Lions at Lambeau Field.

Williams has 12 carries for 58 yards and two touchdowns after his second of the game. Williams sprinted into the end zone for a one-yard score with 5:55 left in the fourth quarter. Williams scored again, giving him a total of 17 for the year. The score broke Sanders’ previous record of 16 rushing touchdowns set by the Lions in 1991 and established a new high for the team.

On the team’s social media pages following the touchdown, the Lions shared a message from Sander to Williams. The sixth-year running back earlier in the game surpassed 1,000 rushing yards for the season. Williams has now joined the club of NFL players with 1,000 running yards for the first time in his career.

The first ex-Cougar to score was former BYU running back Tyler Allgeier earlier in the day. A few hours later, Williams joined Allgeier. Williams has 246 carries for 994 yards and 15 touchdowns going into the game against the Packers. Additionally, he had 12 receptions for 73 yards.

Williams was a star at BYU before entering the NFL. He left Provo as the team’s all-time best rusher in both single-yard and career yards. Williams carried the ball 726 times for 3,901 yards and 35 touchdowns while playing at BYU (2012–14, 2016).

Additionally, he had 60 receptions for 567 yards and a score. Williams only fumbled twice while a college student.

The Green Bay Packers chose the Southern California native in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft after his stint at BYU. Before joining the Lions in 2021, he spent the first four seasons of his professional career with the Packers. In his six seasons in the NFL, Williams had racked up 3,580 yards and 28 touchdowns on the ground.

That rushing touchdown total led the NFL in 2022 and broke Barry Sanders’ single-season rushing touchdowns Lions record set in 1991. “I wanted to congratulate you on an awesome year and for breaking my record, which was the most rushing touchdowns by a Detroit Lion in a single season,” Sanders said in a video message shared by the team. “Awesome job, man. You’ve been a big part of the success this year, and I know you’re just getting started. Great job.”

The Lions narrowly missed the playoffs; nevertheless, Seattle secured the No. 7 (and last) NFC slot on Sunday with an overtime victory; as a result, Detroit stopped Green Bay from making the playoffs. Tyler Allgeier, another former BYU running back, reached 1,000 yards rushing earlier on Sunday when he ran for Atlanta for 135 yards to cap the year with 1,035. Williams and Allgeier are the first two former BYU running backs to surpass 1,000 yards in a single season in the NFL.

“I’m just grateful to do this for him. … I’m just grateful to have him in my life and grateful to play football,” he said on the NBC broadcast following the game.

“There are a lot of memories and emotions right now, but I’m grateful to play this game for my great-grandfather. I know he’s looking down on me. I know I am making him proud.”
