How did Jo Mersa’s Grandfather Bob Marley die?
Bob Marley’s final concert was in Pittsburgh in September 1980, after he had collapsed while jogging in Central Park, New York. He then flew to Germany to undergo a controversial diet-based treatment with Josef Issels, canceling the rest of his live dates in the process. Bob gave up on the treatment after 8 months and returned to Jamaica.
The plane had to make an emergency landing in Miami after his condition deteriorated during the flight. On May 11, 1981, Bob passed away at the Cedars of Lebanon Medical Center. Bob’s skin cancer, acral lentiginous melanoma was discovered in 1977 and spread from under his toenail eventually causing his death.
In 1977, Bob’s melanoma was first noticed after a football game when he suffered an unusually painful foot injury that only got worse. The cancer was discovered and the doctors recommended amputation but he refused because it is a sin in his Rastafarian religion to remove any part of the body that is considered a temple. In the summer of 1980, he agreed to a skin graft but that didn’t stop the disease from spreading throughout his body.
