Treatment for Quaalude Dependence
Insomnia, panic attacks, melancholy, and an addiction to the sedative and hypnotic medicine Quaalude plagued Richard in the late 1970s, the same time that Karen was battling the anorexia nervosa that would eventually claim her life in 1983.
According to New York Times reviewer James Gavin’s summary of Randy L. Schmidt’s Karen Carpenter biography, Little Girl Blue: The Life of the Singer and Songwriter (2010): It was previously depicted in the CBS-TV television film The Karen Carpenter Story (1989), with several reviews mentioning that Agnes (their mother) had been taking them under prescription and thus thought they were safe because of this, and that “his mother is said to have given him his first pill,” to quote from the aforementioned review. Carpenter had a prescription for Quaalude to help him sleep, but his use had gotten out of hand by the time he sought help.
