Ben J. Asner (1915-1986), Eve Asner (1916-2014), Esther Edelman (1919-2014), and Labe Asner were his four older brothers and sisters (1923–2017). In his traditional Jewish upbringing, he took the Hebrew name Yitzhak.

After his time in the military, Asner moved to New York, where he was a part of the reorganization of the Playwrights Theatre Company as the Compass Players in the mid-1950s. After Compass’s cancellation, he became a regular guest star on its successor, The Second City. Asner made his television acting debut on Studio One in 1957 and has since been in several New York productions, including an Off-Broadway staging of Threepenny Opera as Jonathan Jeremiah Peachum and a 1960 production of Face of a Hero opposite Jack Lemmon.

Asner is known for his roles as Detective Sgt. Thomas Siroleo in the 1963 episode “It Crawled Out of the Woodwork” of The Outer Limits and as the repulsive ex-premier Brynov in the 1965 episode “The Exile” of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.
