Masataka Yoshida signs a 5-year contract with the Red Sox

According to ESPN’s reports, the Boston Red Sox and outfielder Masataka Yoshida agreed to a five-year, $90 million contract on Wednesday, bringing the best bat in Japan over the past two years to the team’s rapid retooling.

After being posted by the Orix Buffaloes, the defending Japan Series champions Yoshida then 29 years old, signed with the Red Sox on his first day of free agency. Yoshida, who plays the corner outfield position, had a.335/.447/.561 batting line with 21 home runs, 80 walks, and 41 strikeouts in 508 at-bats this season.

Earlier in the day, the Red Sox and closer Kenley Jansen came to terms on a two-year, $32 million contract that would help strengthen a bullpen that ranked at the bottom of MLB in 2017. The Red Sox overpaid to get Yoshida, but he is anticipated to have an outsized influence.

MLB teams pay a posting fee to international clubs based on a portion of the guaranteed salary of the player they sign, allowing MLB teams to sign players under contract with overseas teams.

Yoshida was one of the top players in Japan during his seven years with Orix. His career batting line reads.326/.419/.538 with only 307 strikeouts throughout 3,251 at-bats. Only Luis Arraez, the leadoff man for the Minnesota Twins, had a lower strikeout rate than Yoshida in Major League Baseball in 2017.
