Today Channel 5 ordered the four-part drama Black Cab from Story Films and All3Media International for broadcast in 2023. Nick Saltrese (A Prayer Before Dawn) is the series’ screenwriter, and Diarmuid Goggins (Kin, Bulletproof, Witness No. 3) is the director. As a producer, Alex Jones (Penance, Witness No. 3) is also on board.
Black Cab a contemporary thriller set in Liverpool about a lone taxi driver’s increasing fascination with a late-night Radio DJ, was commissioned for Channel 5 by Paul Testar, commissioning editor, Drama, Channel 5 and Paramount+. Sam Tipper-Hale and David Nath of Story Films and David Collins of Samson Films are the executive producers.
Lead actor Robert Glenister (Sherwood, Spooks) depicts Liverpool taxi driver Tony, a former respected teacher who has lost his career, his confidence, and his marriage. His only solace comes from the cafe employee Rosa, played by Suzanne Packer (Casualty, In My Skin), and the late-night radio talk-show host Lawrence, played by Sean Pertwee (Dog Soldiers, Elementary, Gotham), to whom he listens to while he drives clients across the city.

Finally mustering the nerve to call Lawrence live on air, Tony quickly becomes a “friend of the program” and, for the first time in years, feels heard. However, as time goes on, he begins to dangerously misinterpret Lawrence’s “worldview.” When Tony becomes too obsessed with Lawrence, he learns the hard way that Lawrence isn’t who he claims to be.
All3Media International will be in charge of international sales.
“I’m happy to be working with Story films on Nick’s excellent Black Cab and to be reunited with the wonderful Suzanne Packer and Sean Pertwee,” Robert Glenister stated upon joining the cast of Black Cab.
Paul Testar, commissioning editor for drama at Channel 5 and Paramount+, says, “I’m really thrilled to be working with the wonderful team at Story Films, after the critically acclaimed Witness Number 3 earlier this year. Black Cab, with a stellar ensemble cast, is a great addition to Channel 5’s original drama lineup.
“Nick Saltrese has crafted a timely and unusual British thriller,” said Story Films executive producer Sam Tipper-Hale. Black Cab examines how a modern talk show host’s comments can consume a man on the brink of insanity.
The show is now filmed in Ireland for a 2023 premiere on Channel 5 in the UK.
