Who is Yamato?

Kaidou is the father of Yamato. Yamato was raised as Kaidou’s heir from birth, but she ended up developing a deep respect for the samurai Kozuki Oden instead. Following his passing, Yamato assumed Oden’s character and adopted his mannerisms in an effort to continue his legacy. Yamato wanted so badly to be Oden that he decided to become a man and introduce himself to the crew as Kaidou’s son.

Yamato’s conflict with Kaidou and the subsequent incarceration of Onigashima are direct results of his decision to follow this course. After becoming friends with Portgas D. Ace while he was visiting Wano Country, Yamato waited for the arrival of Ace’s sworn brother, Monkey D. Luffy.

After at first wanting to join Luffy’s crew, Yamato decided to stay in Wano instead. Nonetheless, he still plans to travel the seven seas at some point in the future. During the Wano Country Arc, Yamato is an important ally of the Straw Hats. You can also read about One Piece Episode 1001 Release date and Spoilers.

Yamato’s Appearance

Since he was given the feminine gender at birth and rarely chooses to present as a male, Yamato is often mistaken for a female by those he meets for the first time. At 263 centimeters (8 feet 8 inches), Yamato towers over most people.

Long, white hair is tied in an orange rod ponytail at the back of his head; the color fades to aqua green and then blue as it gets longer and it ends in rectangular locks, just like Kaidou’s. Yamato has red horns that are mostly red but become more flesh-colored toward the base, large orange eyes with prominent eyelashes, and gold hoop earrings in both ears.

Yamato is currently wearing a white, sleeveless shirt with a diamond pattern on both sides and an indigo wispy-patterned bottom. Like Oden, he wears a large purple and white nio-dasuki behind his back and a pair of red hakama pants and sandals.

In the beginning, Yamato’s disguise also included a hannya mask which consists of a blue wig with a long blue goatee attached to the bottom and a long blue mane attached to the top.

The long white sleeves of Yamato’s kimono were ripped off along with the rest of the disguise, revealing the kimono’s true form.

Yamato’s Personality

Yamato looks up to the legendary samurai Kozuki Oden so much that he claims to take his name. Despite Oden being a man, Yamato has repeatedly claimed to be the son of Kaidou by imitating his gender and identifying as such. Once unsure of how to act in Oden’s stead, Yamato has become increasingly forthright about his new identity, even telling Oden’s son Momonosuke that he is in fact his father.

Yamato has adopted this identity with complete sincerity, but he still considers Yamato to be his “other name.” Upon hearing Luffy call her by an incorrect moniker, Yamato was quick to set the record straight.

The Name of Yamato’s Devil Fruit and Its Relation to Wano Are Revealed in One Piece

Yamato

There was much conjecture amongst One Piece readers as to what kind of animal Yamato’s Devil Fruit form was based on until Chapter 1019 revealed it. Chapter #1020 continues the showdown between Yamato and his father, Kaido and provides a definitive answer to the mystery surrounding the mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruits.

The Okuchi-no-Makami Mythical Zoan Dog-Dog Fruit Model is the divine wolf of Japanese folklore and it is the Devil Fruit that Kaido had sought and Yamato had accidentally consumed. A guardian spirit in the context of Wano, appropriate for someone like Yamato who aspires to fill Oden’s shoes as Wano’s foremost protector. This fact, that his own child is using this power against him to defend the country he is trying to dominate, upsets Kaido.

Yamato will open Wano’s borders in the way that Oden always intended once it has freed Wano and its people from Kaido’s control. Then he uses his breath to attack Namuji Glacier Fang to collide with Kaido’s Blast Breath.

A lot of information can be gleaned from Yamato’s hybrid form being exposed. The Okuchi-no-Makami were compassionate wolf spirits with the ability to communicate with humans, bestow fortune and safeguard crops from predators. As the Japanese wolf population declined in the twentieth century due to systematic hunting and widespread disease, so did the worship of Okuchi-no-Makami, who was revered for his ability to protect humans from harm.

Yamato as a Japanese guardian deity could not have a more appropriate Devil Fruit appearance. Yamato severed all ties with his father, adopting the name of Wano’s legendary hero, Kozuki Oden and promising to finish the job of reopening the country.

Onigashima’s arrival in the Flower Capital could lead to Yamato being hailed as “Oden” by the people of Wano if they see him in his Makami form and believe he can save them from Kaido and Orochi. Yamato has the potential to usher in a new era for Wano with the support of Momonosuke and the Scabbards and the trust of the people.
