Is R.I.P.D.2: Rise of the Damned Actually Better than the Original Movie?
The writers of the unexpected sequel RIPD 2: Rise of the Damned know the first and most important rule of prequels. The movie shouldn’t rely too heavily on references to the original. The alternative is to make a movie that only appeals to the most die-hard fans, but that’s not very interesting. Because of this, it’s likely that the makers of Rise Of The Damned have taken this into account.
Perhaps the most memorable aspect of RIPD is the buddy-action dynamic between Ryan Reynolds in one of his many attempts before Deadpool to break into a comics-based franchise and Jeff Bridges at the height of his True Grit cowboy persona. The concept comes from a Dark Horse comic book series and is essentially a mashup of Men in Black and Ghostbusters.
Since those actors won’t be appearing in this direct-to-streaming prequel, the only thing drawing people in will be the universe’s backstory. Despite being a backstory for Roy it’s easy to lose track of him because Burn Notice’s Jeffrey Donovan doesn’t even try to mimic Bridges’ cottony tobacco-stained drawl or fake a 19th-century cowboy effect.

Whereas Old Roy was a gunslinger straight out of a Saturday morning cartoon. Young Roy is more like something you’d see in a local TV commercial during the breaks between episodes of the said cartoon. Donovan appears to be merely pretending to be serious about his role.
Making RIPD 2 could be argued to be doing the same thing. This is the sort of thing that proves the adage “No one asked for this” is false when applied to other films. The Buzz Lightyear spinoff from the classic Toy Story franchise was something “no one asked for,” huh? When compared to this prequel, which is a decade later and to a critically panned flop that is only vaguely similar to its fellow flop Jonah Hex, the former film seems essential.
Leyden’s decision to streamline the original RIPD’s summer-movie bombast into an enjoyable, swiftly paced supernatural Western is a rousing success, especially in light of Rise Of The Damned’s utter lack of necessity. Working in the RIPD universe, however requires an appreciation for the benefits of doing nothing at all.
