House of the Dragon seems to be following in the footsteps of Game of Thrones’s precursor, which became renowned for the moral ambiguity shared by both heroes and antagonists.
In light of this, Consequence is pleased to present Who’s the Worst Person in Westeros, a weekly rating of the most prominent figures from House of the Dragon and how nasty they turned out to be each week. Everyone you see on screen qualifies for this list (dragons included! ), though you can anticipate the show’s regulars to be featured prominently most of the time.
There is only one major battle scene and very little time-jumping in “We Light the Way” (other than the months at sea when royals go back and forth from King’s Landing). Instead, there is a lot of talking, but the talk is interesting because it shows smart individuals assessing the political climate and making plans for conflict.
The question of whether that war will be waged on a battlefield with swords or in a castle with words and intrigue remains open at this stage, as a number of new players emerge in this game of… I’m sure there’s a clever way to wrap things up, but right now I can’t think of one. Below you read about the characters who appear in the House of Dragon:
House of Dragon Characters
Viserys (Paddy Considine) the current king of Westeros is the older brother of Daemon and the father of Rhaenyra. He beat out his cousin Rhaenys for the position of his grandfather’s heir. Now it is up to him to name his own successor. The monarchy’s Queen Aemma Arryn is his queenly spouse.
Milly Alcock portrays a young Rhaenyra, while Emma D’Arcy plays her as an adult. Despite being King Visery’s firstborn, she is a female, which casts doubt on her right to the Iron Throne. Moreover, she is a skilled dragon rider.
Daemon (Matt Smith), the younger brother of King Viserys, is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. An accomplished dragonrider and fierce fighter.
As well as being the father of Alicent Hightower, Otto also serves as King Viserys’s Hand. As portrayed by Rhys Ifans, he is a loyal servant of the realm who is yet an avowed enemy of Daemon.
Alicent, Rhaenyra’s best friend and Otto’s daughter (played by Emily Carey as an adolescent and Olivia Cooke as an adult), is a character in the series. Having spent her childhood in the Red Keep of King’s Landing, she has close ties to the royal family.
A male relative, King Viserys, was chosen instead of Rhaenys (Eve Best) many years ago to sit on the Iron Throne. She is known as “the queen who never was” and is currently married to Lord Corlys Velaryon.
Lord Corlys Velaryon
Steve Toussaint’s character, Corlys, has earned him the nickname “Sea Snake” due to his extensive nautical experience. He’s married to Rhaenys Targaryen and runs the Velaryon family.
Queen Aemma Arryn
Queen Aemma Arryn (Sian Brooke), King Viserys’s wife, is set on providing him with a male heir to the Iron Throne.
Graham McTavish portrays Ser Harrold a formidable knight and member of the Kingsguard who now keeps guard over the kingdom of Rhaenyra.
A skilled swordsman from Dorne, Ser Criston (Fabien Frankel) has garnered attention in King’s Landing.
Who do you think is the Best Character in House of the Dragon and Why?
Despite his villainous nature, Otto Hightower is arguably the book’s most astute protagonist. All of the Seven Kingdoms know him as a man who is extremely well-versed in a wide variety of topics and is therefore considered a man of great knowledge.
Can we assume that Daemon Targaryen is the Night King?
The fact that Aemond Targaryen’s body was discovered after the Dance of the Dragons is more proof that he is not the Night King. Having been sent by Rhaenyra to deal with her brother, who together with Vhagar has been setting fire to the Riverlands, Aemond is murdered by his uncle Daemon.
What was the identity of the Night King before he was transformed?
The Night’s King is said to have been a Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch who discovered a cold woman with dazzling blue eyes, presumably a female White Walker, in the Haunted Forest. When they were on the other side of the Wall, he crowned himself “Night’s King” and carried her there.
