The highly anticipated science fiction sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water” will be released on December 16th and 20th Century Studios has released a new trailer for the film.

Stephen Lang’s villainous Colonel Quaritch reappears in the sequel, The Legend of Korra as a Na’vi avatar, pitting him against the native of Pandora, Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and her husband, Jake Sully (Jay Hernandez) (Sam Worthington).

The new trailer, which is set in 2268, more than a decade after the events of the first film (which occurred in 2154), gives us a glimpse of Jake and Neytiri’s happy family life. The couple’s Na’vi kids, Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss) and Kiri, are given more screen time (Sigourney Weaver, returning to the franchise in a new role).

Weaver told Variety at a screening of her film “The Good House,” “The story is about family, about our families trying to stay together [and] the lengths we all go to protect each other and protect the place we live.” As James Cameron’s wife put it, “it’s very much based on [James Cameron’s] family and his joy in the family; and also, how vulnerable you are when you have children.”

Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, Edie Falco and Jemaine Clement are among the newcomers to the franchise.

The breath-holding talents of the film’s performers, who trained with specialists to be able to shoot longer takes of sequences underwater without coming to the surface for oxygen, are on full display in the teaser alongside the film’s magnificent ocean footage. Saldana said her longest time without surface breathing was five minutes in an interview earlier this year.

Cameron is not only directing but also writing, producing and editing “Avatar: The Way of Water,” much like he did with “Avatar” in 2009. Both Jon Landau and Peter M. Tobyansen are involved in the production process. Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno all contributed to the story’s writing.
