GLENDALE Arizona’s defence picked off New Orleans Saints quarterback Andy Dalton twice in a row right before halftime and the Cardinals went on to upset the Saints 42-34.
Kliff Kingsbury’s Cardinals scored 42 points their most in a game since Week 17 of 2016. Arizona’s eight consecutive home defeats prior to this win were matched for the longest home-losing skid by the team since 1940.

The Cardinals desperately needed a victory. They had a 2-4 record a weak offence and were on the verge of a disastrous start to the season.
The defence played well with two interceptions returned for scores and the team was able to put together this performance on national television. The Cardinals took control of a game that had been knotted at 14 before interceptions by cornerback Marco Wilson and linebacker Isaiah Simmons on successive drives.
The Cardinals’ game on Thursday night may end up being the season-clincher. In his first game back from suspension DeAndre Hopkins had an immediate impression. He caught 10 passes for 103 yards and adjusted to the Cardinals’ offence as well as could be imagined. I’m going out on a limb here and saying that Robbie Anderson will play a bigger role in the Cardinals’ offence next week against the Minnesota Vikings because he’ll have had plenty of time to learn the playbook and understand his role in the offence between Thursday night’s game and the next game on November 15. Turnovers, poor tackling, and poorly timed penalties are all things the Saints have promised to improve. They keep insisting there’s still a lot of the season still to go.
However, the Saints’ downward trend appears to be continuing following their fifth loss in six games. Dalton’s two pick-sixes resulted in 14 scores, and the Saints’ defence which was once the team’s strength has suffered this year.
With wide receivers Michael Thomas and Jarvis Landry out and three cornerbacks out for the count, injuries undoubtedly had a role in the final score (Marshon Lattimore, Paulson Adebo and now Bradley Roby). But the Saints’ problems go beyond injuries; they’ve been making the same blunders since Week 1.
Breaking down the quarterback situation: Dalton has never been able to produce in the biggest games. Dalton was the only quarterback in the game who has lost five consecutive prime-time games by at least 17 points since 1970.

An alarming pattern has emerged as the Saints continued their league-worst turnover differential. Their offence turned the ball over three times and their defence didn’t steal it once.
The Saints’ season has been plagued by costly mistakes like turnovers and penalties at inopportune times. Saints head coach Dennis Allen has promised on several occasions that the team will address these issues but they have yet to do so.
The biggest flaw in strategy was that the Saints’ playmakers went missing at inopportune times. After catching a 53-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter rookie receiver Rashid Shaheed did not have another touch for the rest of the game.
Taysom Hill who caught the one pass sent his way for a score was benched for the majority of the final period. The Saints’ offence is already thin so it would be surprising if they didn’t try to play some of their best players.
The Saints’ quarterbacks have thrown six pick-sixes since the start of the 2016 season, which is tied for the most in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams and is a relatively unknown fact.
