Al Michaels’ Early Life
On November 12, 1944, he entered this world with Jay Leonard Michaels and Lila Roginsky in Brooklyn, New York. Michaels has long been a supporter of the Brooklyn Dodgers. When Michaels was in college, he studied broadcasting at Arizona State University and journalism on the side.

Back in the broadcasting game in Honolulu in 1968, he covered sports for KHVT-TV and did play-by-play for the Hawaii Islanders baseball team. Moving to Cincinnati in 1971, Michaels took over play-by-play duties for the MLB club’s Reds. Next year, the Reds made it to the Fall Classic and Al was able to contribute to NBC Sports’ coverage of the event.
The hockey coverage from the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan was also his responsibility. When Bill Enis, the NBC announcer, died of a heart attack at age 39 just two days before the 1973 NFL season finale, Al Michaels was brought in to fill the void. Michaels moved on from the Reds to the San Francisco Giants in 1974 and also began covering basketball for UCLA.
In 1975, he started calling local games for CBS Sports. During the month of January 1977, he inked a contract with ABC Sports. He stayed with ABC until 2006 when he made the switch to NBC.

On the 21st of April, 2013, police stopped Al for suspicion of drunk driving. About five hours later, he was let go. He was charged with reckless driving but pled no contest, resulting in a reduced charge and a sentence of probation and 80 hours of community service.

Over the course of 20 seasons, Michaels hosted Monday Night Football. Al Michaels’ nearly 30-year tenure at ABC and 20-year run on Monday Night Football came to an end in February 2006 when NBC announced that Michaels would be leaving ABC to join Madden at the network to broadcast football on Sunday nights.
