With the release of “Deadpool 3” on September 6, 2024, Hugh Jackman will join Ryan Reynolds in the MCU. For Deadpool’s first outing as a Disney property, Ryan Reynolds, who previously played the “merc with a mouth” in multiple 20th Century Fox films, announced the pairing with Jackman on social media.
Ryan Reynolds, seated on his couch, said in the video, “Hey everyone, we’re incredibly unhappy to have missed D23, but we’ve been working very hard on the next ‘Deadpool’ film for a good long while.” For this, I had to do some serious introspection. His initial Marvel Cinematic Universe debut warrants a grand introduction. Every Deadpool needs to be distinct from the others if we’re going to be faithful to the character and give him fresh layers of complexity and drive. This has been a tremendous test that has prompted me to go deep within myself.
How about one more round of “Wolverine,” Hugh? As Jackman enters the frame from behind, Reynolds asks.
To which Ryan responds, “Yeah, sure,” Jackman says.

Movies like Deadpool starring Ryan Reynolds are unusual in Hollywood. Each R-rated installment of the “Deadpool” series has grossed over $780 million around the world. The rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films are all classified PG-13 or below, so this is likely why Disney has allowed “Deadpool 3” to be labeled R.
After Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, “Deadpool 3,” directed by Shawn Levy (who previously worked with Reynolds on “Free Guy” and “The Adam Project“), will officially become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The screenplay for the third “Deadpool” film was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who had previously written the first two films in the series. Even inside the generally family-friendly MCU, Reese has stated that “Deadpool 3” will be kept at an R rating.
Fans of the X-Men last saw Jackman in the role of Wolverine in James Mangold’s R-rated “Logan” (2016). Famously, Wolverine dies at the end of the film, and Jackman has said that this is his last time playing the part. His role in “Deadpool 3” remains mysterious. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently told Variety, “Anything is conceivable in the multiverse,” which seems to justify the character’s penchant for breaking the fourth wall in both the movies and the comics.
Reynolds and Jackman have worked together in the superhero genre before. The first “X-Men” spinoff to center on Jackman’s character was 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” in which the “Deadpool” star starred. However, in that adaptation, Deadpool’s lips were stitched shut, and he was not dressed in his signature red and black. Years later, in an R-rated sequel to “Deadpool,” Reynolds reprised his role as the witty assassin.
Over $780 million has been made from each “Deadpool” film, making them the highest-grossing “X-Men” movies of all time. Prior to Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the first two films were distributed by the former studio.
James Mangold, director of the acclaimed “Logan,” who supposedly put a stop to Wolverine’s saga once and for all, reacted to the announcement of “Deadpool 3” with a gif.
