Before officially being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, Nick Jonas’ body showed signs of distress. The musician, who was 13 at the time, underwent a dramatic weight loss. He also started constantly craving sugary sodas, another telltale indicator of diabetes. When Jonas’s brother first observed his symptoms, he went to the doctor, where they discovered his blood sugar levels were 917, which is nine times the normal range.

Telling Cigar Aficionado, “I was extremely close to a coma,” he described his condition. It would have been “like a day away” if I hadn’t gone to the hospital. At 27, Jonas was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, which means he produces very little or no insulin on his own and must take insulin injections. He worried that one day he would need insulin to stay alive.

Now that he’s been diabetic-free for 14 years, Jonas wants to assist other people with the disease learn to “prioritize a healthy life” by sharing his own story with them.

His advice was simple: “You gotta go to your doctor and get your checkups and make sure you’re in the healthiest space you can be,” he added.
