Russell Wilson has committed his career to the Denver Broncos by signing a five-year extension to his current contract with the team. The 33-year-old quarterback signed a reported $245 million agreement with the Broncos, keeping him under contract through 2028.
Wilson told reporters, “It’s not really about me; it’s about being surrounded by guys who want to put the work in every single day and the dedication to it.”
“I want to be here for a long time, I believe this is a marriage and I want to be here for a long time. My goal is to be able to finish my career here.”
Wilson was drafted in the third round by the Seahawks in 2012 and in his ten years with the team he led them to the playoffs eight times. He was successful enough in 2014 to make it to the Super Bowl twice and earn a championship.
The March trade that transferred Wilson from the Seahawks to the Broncos sent shockwaves around the NFL. Two first-round picks two second-round picks a fifth-round pick, quarterback Drew Lock defensive tackle Shelby Harris and tight end Noah Fant were all involved in the trade.
But the nine-time Pro Bowler has remained one of the league’s top quarterbacks, ranking 15th all-time in throwing touchdowns with 292. He has also started all but three of the 177 games he has played in the NFL.
Broncos GM George Paton remarked, “In just a few short months with the Broncos, Russell has already had a dramatic effect on this organization both on and off the field.” “His leadership, work-ethic and championship mentality have helped elevate our team in partnership with Coach Hackett, his teammates and the staff.”
Wilson and the Broncos will face off against his former team the Seahawks in their season opener on September 13 in Seattle.
