There are a few things you can always count on Netflix for and one of them is consistently gripping documentary content. The streaming site has been more recognized for its prolific non-fiction offerings, both episodic and feature length.
This year, viewers have already been asked to dig into the likes of Trainwreck: Woodstock ’99, The Most Hated Man on the Internet, and beyond. On the other side, the current focuses its spotlight on John McAfee, the British-American computer programmer who GQ reports were wanted on suspicion of murder.
During this period, he enlisted a video team to chronicle him on the run through Belize and Guatemala. The documentary sheds light on the fugitive tech pioneer’s life through historical videos and new interviews.
What Exactly Happened to John Mcafee?
Sources report that 52-year-old Greg Faullwas murdered at his Belize house in 2012 after complaining about McAfee’s dogs. Faull was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head after allegedly poisoning the pets. McAfee later became a “person of interest” for investigators and he went into hiding by moving to Guatemala.
However, he was later deported back to the US. He was sentenced to pay $25 million in a wrongful death claim back in 2019 but was never really charged with any crime in the country in relation to Faull’s death, according to sources.
The Metro reports that McAffee fled Belize under the notion that he would be tortured or even assassinated for being a suspect in the case and he then moved across the Caribbean fleeing the lawsuit. After he returned to the US, McAfee claimed to the media “I don’t think anybody thinks I murdered my neighbor except you, the press,” Meaww reports.
Life After Guatemala
According to sources, McAfee tried to run for president in 2016 and 2020 despite his belief that paying taxes was illegal. In 2019, he stated that he hadn’t filed with the IRS since 2010.
However, he was apprehended in Norway in the year 2020 for not wearing a mask and instead wearing a thong. Again, he was detained in October of the same year, but this time for tax evasion in the United States, two months after this occurrence in Spain.
The Metro adds that he avoided paying taxes on his income between 2014 and 2018 and he received a separate indictment in 2021 in Manhattan federal court for alleged cryptocurrency fraud.
How Did John Mcafee Die?
Sources say that McAfee’s body was found in a jail cell in Spain in June 2021. The Catalan legal system has commented on the fact that they did their best to save his life but were ultimately unsuccessful. “Judicial staff have been dispatched to the prison and are investigating the causes of death,” the statement read.
