‘House Of The Dragon’ Premiere On HBO Draws Nearly 10 Million Viewers Full Report

HBO made history when House of the Dragon debuted. In the United States on Sunday, the Game of Thrones prequel attracted 9.986 million people across linear and HBO Max platforms, the highest audience for a brand-new original series in pay cabler’s history.

The debut also represented the biggest series launch on HBO Max in the U.S., Latin America, and EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa), generating what HBO describes as an unprecedented number of concurrent streams on the platform. According to the network, a typical Sunday night audience for an HBO series is only 20%–40% of the total gross audience.

Must Know-

Approximately 350% more people watched the premiere than the Game of Thrones premiere in 2011. Of course, there was no HBO Max back then, and the TV industry didn’t care much about streaming. Another interesting fact: The 82-minute Game of Thrones series finale in 2019 broke all HBO records with 19.3 million viewers across linear viewing, which included the defunct HBO Go and HBO Now.

Casey Bloys, Chief Content Officer, HBO & HBO Max, exclaimed, “House of the Dragon boasts an extraordinarily talented cast and crew who gave their all to the production. We’re pleased with viewers’ favorable reception.” We are eager to reveal to the public what else George, Ryan, and Miguel have planned for them this season.

Be aware that these are the initial stats we have for the George R.R. Martin Game of Thrones spinoff, and that HBO will likely release greater numbers later on Monday. Samba TV does not track mobile usage, but its sample comprises a panel of 3 million terrestrial TVs that are weighted according to the US Census.

Compared to Nielsen’s household footprint of 45K homes, Samba TV’s panel is about 100 times larger. Between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. ET, Samba recorded viewing of House of the Dragon for its first six hours.

HBO reported in January that the Season 2 premiere of Euphoria, starring Emmy winner Zendaya, attracted 2.4 million viewers across all of its platforms on its Sunday night debut. The network claimed that this was the strongest digital premiere performance of any HBO episode on HBO Max since the streaming service’s launch in May of last year.

Note that the same-day total surpasses HBO Max weekend coverage of some of the day-and-date theatrical releases during WarnerMedia’s experiment last year, including Many Saints of Newark (1.6M), Dune (1.9M), and Wonder Woman 1984 (2.2M in its first weekend) (1M). However, HBO linear was not included in those statistics because the films only appeared on HBO Max.

According to Samba TV, House of the Dragon’s initial same-day viewership surpassed that of Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things (1.2 million US households watched it on its first day), more than double that of its Season 4 launch earlier this summer.

The $125k-$150k group over-indexed by the greatest percentage (+23%), followed by the $200k+ group (+21%), among higher-income households who watched the first episode of House of the Dragon. Both millennials (Adults 25–34) and Gen-Z (Adults 20–24) over-indexed in terms of viewing by 4% and 1%, respectively.
