Later, Depp would sue a British tabloid for defamation for its coverage of the allegations and Heard for an op-ed published in her name in the Washington Post. An extensive trial was held to determine whether or not Heard had defamed Depp in her op-ed piece after she filed a countersuit. The jury found her guilty of defamation on three counts. Johnny Depp’s lawyer issued a statement on his client’s behalf, which resulted in a court awarding Heard $2 million and ordering her to pay $10.35 million. Heard’s domestic violence charges and following court trials sparked widespread criticism, particularly on social media.
