Leslie Grace, the actress supposed to play Barbara Gordon/Batgirl in the upcoming DC Comics picture “Batgirl,” is now speaking up for the first time following the unexpected revelation that Warner Bros. would not be moving forward with the project.
The star of “In the Heights” took to Instagram on Wednesday to share a series of movie images and footage from the set of the nearly $100 million superhero film. He began the post with the caption “Querida familia!” (which translates to “Dear Family!” in Spanish), which was followed by a series of images from the set.

Grace stated, “In light of the current news regarding our film ‘Batgirl,’ I am proud of the love, hard work, and intention that all of our wonderful cast and hardworking crew put into this picture over seven months in Scotland.”
She went on to describe how she was very “fortunate” to be working with such a fantastic team on the project, and she concluded by addressing a special letter to all of the fans of “Batgirl”:
“To every Batgirl supporter out there: THANK YOU for the love and belief; you made it possible for me to don the cape and become, as Babs put it so eloquently: “my damn hero!” #Batgirl for life!”
The statements made by Grace came shortly after a spokeswoman for Warner Bros. confirmed that the DC Comics picture will not be moving forward. The spokesperson stated that the film’s budget has grown to more than $90 million due to COVID-19 delays and associated shutdowns.
“The decision to not distribute ‘Batgirl’ reflects our leadership’s strategy shift as it pertains to the DC universe and HBO Max,” a spokeswoman for Warner Bros. stated in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Batgirl” was a television show based on the DC Comics character Batgirl.
Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the filmmakers of “Batgirl,” have also issued their own statements in response to the film’s cancellation.
The two individuals stated that they were “devastated” and “shocked” by the information and that they “still can’t believe it.”
“As directors, it is critical that our work be shown to audiences,” said the filmmakers, who also directed “Bad Boys for Life,” which is scheduled to be released in 2020. “While the film was far from finished, we wish that fans worldwide would have had the opportunity to see and embrace the final film themselves,” said the filmmakers.
Zoe Saldana, a Marvel Comics star, has spoken out against Warner Bros. for their decision to cancel the “Batgirl” movie. The actress posted a picture of Grace on her Instagram account along with the inscription: “Not fair… A heinous deed was committed by a studio. To what end? To get a break on your taxes?!”
