Early Life

Steve was born on May 23, 1998, in Compton, California to a Filipino father and African-American mother, Valerie. He didn’t actually know his father, saying that his father used to visit them only for certain occasions like birthdays. When he was ten years old, his father passed away.

He went to private school and stated that he was raised sheltered, which was an outcome of his mother’s efforts to protect Steve and his sisters from the environment around Compton during that period. 

Career

At the age of just 7, Steve Lacy developed an interest in guitar after inspiring by the video game “Guitar Hero” and soon after, he became passionate about learning to play guitar. When he used to attend jazz band, he met fellow band member Jameel Bruner. He started producing by making beats on his iPhone and ended up creating his first songs on his mobile. 

He then produced his third album on the Internet “Ego Death” which consisted of 8 singles. The album received a nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. Later, Matt Martians’ debut solo album titled “The Drum Chord Theory” featured Lacy followed by featuring in Syd’s Fin.

Then, he started producing tracks for Twenty88, Isaiah Rashad, Denzel Curry, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, and GoldLink. Lacy went on to produce a track entitled “Pride” for Kendrick’s Grammy Award-winning album titled “Damn”. He then released his first extended play “Demo”.

Steve Lacy served as the co-writer and producer for Ravyn Lenae’s EP Crush which came out in February 2018. In 2017, when he released solo projects with his Internet bandmates, he released Hive Mind in July 2018. He then produced songs for Solange and also worked on Kali Uchis’s “Isolation”, and Mac Miller’s “Swimming”. He was featured in the 2018 album “Negro Swan” by Dev Hynes. 

In 2019, Lacy produced two songs for an album titled “When I Get Home” by Solange and was featured on Vampire Weekend’s “Sunflower”. In April, he released his debut single titled “N Side” which was for his debut album “Apollo XXI” which was released on May 24, 2019.

He then went on to release another two singles titled “Playground” and “Hate CD” in the week of his album debut. The album received a nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards which was his first Grammy nomination as a solo artist. 

Lacy released his next album titled “The Lo-Fis” on December 4, 2020, and on June 16, 2022, he released a single titled “Mercury”.
