Jurassic World Dominion’ Nears $750M International Box Office 2022

Top Gun: Maverick from Paramount/Skydance and Jurassic World Dominion from Universal/Amblin had huge weekends at the global and international box office, while Warner Bros.’ newcomer Elvis took in $50.5 million globally. According to previous reports, Tom Cruise’s latest film, The Global Pandemic, surpassed $1 billion in worldwide box office receipts in just 31 days, making it the only other film to accomplish this feat during the pandemic.

A $43 million foreign box office weekend for Universal/third Amblin’s Jurassic movie has propelled it to $747 million worldwide. Only seven films have grossed more than $700 million throughout the pandemic. A total of $443.8 million is expected to have been spent offshore as of Sunday. And that’s only a 45% decrease. Is it on track to surpass the $1 billion mark? Yes, it appears that that.

Across 50 international regions, Warner Bros.’s Elvis is off to a rocking start with $20 million in ticket sales. To put things in perspective, Universal/Despicable Illumination’s Me 3 and Minions: The Rise Of Gru both opened in the top five at the box office this weekend, while Minions: The Rise Of Gru debuted at number one with $3.7 million.

New Elvis

WB’s Baz Luhrmann-directed biopic raked in $20 million in 50 countries. The film had its international premiere at Cannes and was recently shown at the CineEurope convention in Barcelona for European exhibitors. There was a $560K IMAX total.

In today’s like-for-like markets, Elvis leads by 8% over Rocketman and by 24% over both Moulin Rouge and House Of Gucci. Following Japan on July 12th, Korea will follow on July 13th, and Latin America will follow on July 14th.

A total of $4.7 million came from Australia and the United Kingdom. Compared to The Great Gatsby, this is Luhrmann’s second-best opening in Australia, while in the United Kingdom, it is nearly on a level with Rocketman, 12 percent above Great Gatsby, and 25 percent above Warner Brothers’ A Star Is Born.

Germany brought in $1 million, with an 8.3/10 customer satisfaction rating at UCI Odeon, which is higher than both Tenet and Joker. First place went to Rocketman with $915K; Italy was 22 percent ahead of the pack. For the first time, Luhrmann’s picture had the biggest opening ever in Holland ($802K) and New Zealand ($666K).

The Black Phone

With $12.5 million in ticket sales in 45 markets, this Universal/Blumhouse horror flick ranks among Ouija, Don’t Breathe and Get Out. The overall sum is $35.8 million. The Conjuring 3 opened to a better start for a horror/thriller during the pandemic age, but Mexico took the lead with $3.4M, making it the industry’s 12th greatest horror opening of all time. It came in second place to Disney’s Lightyear in the toy industry.

The Black Phone

Just like Don’t Breathe, Don’t Breathe’s UK debut raked in $1.7 million. The weekend’s box office had a significant leap over Friday’s, defying the tendency of many pandemic horror films, which saw their numbers fall around the same time. The end of exams and the beginning of summer vacation are sure to bring out a large number of adolescent viewers.

France debuted at No. 3 with $800,000, right behind Halloween Kills and Don’t Breathe. The Scream revival came in second place with $700,000 in Saudi Arabia, ahead of all other pandemic horrors save The Conjuring 3 and A Quiet Place II, which opened at No. 1. A $700,000 opening throughout the rest of the Middle East was the pandemic’s highest horror opening ahead of Split and Halloween.

The greatest opening day for a horror picture since Old in July 2021 and a weekend total of $600,000, in line with Halloween Kills and ahead of the sequel to Quiet Place II, were both achieved in Spain this weekend. As of this writing, just four countries stand out: Japan, Australia, Brazil, and Korea.

Holdovers Top Gun: Maverick

On this soaring voyage through Sunday, the worldwide total, comprising domestic’s projected $521.7 million and international’s estimated $484.7 million, is estimated at $1.006 billion.

Maverick gained $44.5 million across 65 markets this week, including a new No. 1 opening in Korea ($12.9 million) and several No. 1 holds in several major cities.

Jurassic World Dominion

A decrease of only 45 percent and a $43 million foreign box office weekend in 72 nations drove the dinosaurs to $443.8 million in overseas earnings. The worldwide total is $747 million.

In comparison to other recent openers, Doctor Strange 2 and Top Gun: Maverick, Ukraine had a $285k opening weekend. As a result of the upcoming holiday on the 28th, the box office should see an uptick following the weekend’s festivities.

JWD has already raked in $114.3 million in China, a country that hasn’t always been hospitable to Hollywood in recent months. It’s the best-selling studio title in the People’s Republic of China to yet in 2022.

Mexico ($39.7 million), the United Kingdom ($33.4 million), Australia ($18.5 million), and France ($19 million) round out the top five countries so far. Japan will arrive on July 29, and so far, so good.
