Top Gun: Maverick from Paramount/Skydance and Jurassic World Dominion from Universal/Amblin had huge weekends at the global and international box office, while Warner Bros.’ newcomer Elvis took in $50.5 million globally. According to previous reports, Tom Cruise’s latest film, The Global Pandemic, surpassed $1 billion in worldwide box office receipts in just 31 days, making it the only other film to accomplish this feat during the pandemic.
A $43 million foreign box office weekend for Universal/third Amblin’s Jurassic movie has propelled it to $747 million worldwide. Only seven films have grossed more than $700 million throughout the pandemic. A total of $443.8 million is expected to have been spent offshore as of Sunday. And that’s only a 45% decrease. Is it on track to surpass the $1 billion mark? Yes, it appears that that.
Across 50 international regions, Warner Bros.’s Elvis is off to a rocking start with $20 million in ticket sales. To put things in perspective, Universal/Despicable Illumination’s Me 3 and Minions: The Rise Of Gru both opened in the top five at the box office this weekend, while Minions: The Rise Of Gru debuted at number one with $3.7 million.
New Elvis
WB’s Baz Luhrmann-directed biopic raked in $20 million in 50 countries. The film had its international premiere at Cannes and was recently shown at the CineEurope convention in Barcelona for European exhibitors. There was a $560K IMAX total.
In today’s like-for-like markets, Elvis leads by 8% over Rocketman and by 24% over both Moulin Rouge and House Of Gucci. Following Japan on July 12th, Korea will follow on July 13th, and Latin America will follow on July 14th.
A total of $4.7 million came from Australia and the United Kingdom. Compared to The Great Gatsby, this is Luhrmann’s second-best opening in Australia, while in the United Kingdom, it is nearly on a level with Rocketman, 12 percent above Great Gatsby, and 25 percent above Warner Brothers’ A Star Is Born.

While Star Is Born and House Of Gucci both opened at $2 million, France came in at $2 million, 13 percent ahead of House Of Gucci and 18 percent ahead of Rocketman. Allociné gave the picture an impressive 4.3 out of 5 stars. Star Wars: The Force Awakens came in at fourth place with a score of 4.43.
Germany brought in $1 million, with an 8.3/10 customer satisfaction rating at UCI Odeon, which is higher than both Tenet and Joker. The weekend’s box office had a significant leap over Friday’s, defying the tendency of many pandemic horror films, which saw their numbers fall around the same time.
