Bipartisan Gun Deal: No ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban, No Rifle Age Raise

In the aftermath of previous mass shootings, a bipartisan group of senators struck a deal on gun control legislation on Sunday — albeit the compromise removes President Joe Biden’s “assault weapons” ban and an increased minimum age for rifle purchases.

Mental health and school safety are among the goals of the Republican Party in this agreement. Those under 21 will now have their juvenile histories reviewed before purchasing a gun as a concession to Democratic priorities. The bipartisan group has prepared a news release outlining the proposed legislation’s details: Senators from both parties have announced an agreement.

The following senators are from the state of Connecticut: Chris Murphy (D), John Cornyn (R), Thom Tillis (R), Kyrsten Sinema (D), Richard Blumenthal (D), Roy Blunt (R), and Bill Cassidy (R). They are also from the state of New Jersey: Cory Booker (D), Richard Burr (R), and Bill Cassidy (R) are from the state of Louisiana: Bill Cassidy (R) and Susan Collins (R). They issue the following statement:

“Today, we are announcing a commonsense, bipartisan proposal to protect America’s children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence across our country. Families are scared, and it is our duty to come together and get something done that will help restore their sense of safety and security in their communities. Our plan increases needed mental health resources, improves school safety and support for students, and helps ensure dangerous criminals and those who are adjudicated as mentally ill can’t purchase weapons. Most importantly, our plan saves lives while also protecting the constitutional rights of law-abiding Americans. The 60-vote threshold for defeating a legislative filibuster in the Senate is not apparent, nor is it clear whether the “progressive”-led Democratic caucus in the House would pass what they would perceive as a watered-down package.
