Early Life and Career Beginnings

Cara Delevingne was born on the 12th of August, 1992 in Hammersmith, London to Pandora Anne and Charles Hamar Delevingne. Her father is a property developer.

Cara was raised in Belgravia, London and she also has two siblings; two older sisters: Chloe and Poppy along with a paternal half-brother, Alex Jaffe. 

Cara went to Francis Holland School for Girls in Central London and then attended Bedales School in Steep, Hampshire. When she was 17, she eventually dropped her studies in pursuit of a career in modeling.

She signed on with Storm Management in 2009. Though her early modeling years weren’t easy at all and she even worked in the industry for a year prior to when she landed a paying job, and she went through castings for two seasons prior to when she got her first runway show.

In a June 2015 interview with Vogue, Cara opened up about her battle with depression at the age of 15; she said “I was hit with a massive wave of depression and anxiety and self-hatred, where the feelings were so painful that I would slam my head against a tree to try to knock myself out.”

Personal Life

Cara identifies as bisexual and pansexual openly. She revealed in June 2015 that she was dating American musician St. Vincent. In September 2016, the couple separated in September 2016.

Cara came out as genderfluid in May 2018 and she uses she/her pronouns. Later, Cara revealed in June 2019 that she was dating actress and model Ashley Benson and they broke up in April 2020, following dating for two years.

Delevingne revealed in October 2017 that circa 2016, producer Harvey Weinstein sexually assaulted her, tried to kiss her without consent, and asked her for a threesome in a hotel room in exchange for a role.

In spite of refusing, she still landed the film’s cast though she claims she regretted it as she was frightened by his actions.

The 2017 film titled Tulip Fever starring Delevingne was produced by The Weinstein Company. Further, Cara also says that circa 2014, he told her she won’t get work as an actress in Hollywood after she revealed her sexuality.

Modeling Career

Cara got her first big break when she was working part-time on a fashion website. She was then spotted by Burberry’s Christopher Bailey, who cast her in the brand’s spring/summer 2011 campaign.

She walked in New York Fashion Week in 9 shows for fashion houses during the 2012 season such as Rag & Bone, Jason Wu, Thakoon, Tory Burch, Donna Karan, and Oscar de la Renta.

Later, she walked in London Fashion Week exclusively for Burberry; in Milan Fashion Week she walked in 6 shows for Trussardi, Fendi, Moschino, DSquared2, Blumarine, and Dolce & Gabbana; and ultimately, she walked in Paris Fashion Week in 7 shows for Sonia Rykiel, Nina Ricci, Kenzo, Cacharel, Paul & Joe, Stella McCartney, and Chanel.

This season was considered to be her breakthrough and following she walked in over twenty shows throughout the 2012 season’s Fashion Month, she started gaining media attention and she was referred to as the “crush of the season” by Vogue Magazine whereas The Daily Telegraph called her “THE girl of the season”.

By the time the next Fashion Month began, in 2012, Cara was already the new darling of the fashion industry. In September 2012, she walked in more than fifty shows in London, Milan, New York, and Paris.

The two international catwalk seasons were her busiest time of the year. In 2015, she started to reduce her catwalk presence, and became more selective and walked in just a few numbers of shows.

Later, she appeared in many films, along with the psychological thriller titled “The Face of an Angel” alongside Daniel Bruhl and Kate Beckinsale; 2015’s “Paper Towns” 2015 where she portrayed the lead role of Margo Roth Spiegelman; the Chanel short film titled “Reincarnation” alongside Pharrell Williams and Geraldine Chaplin; 2015’s “Pan”; the 2016 film titled “Suicide Squad” and “Kids in Love”; the 2017 film titled “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” alongside Dane DeHaan and Rihanna and the same year she appeared in “Tulip Fever”; and the 2018 film “London Fields”.

Cara has also featured in many music videos for artists such as ASAP Ferg, Die Antwoord, and Taylor Swift, and appeared in the 2019 Amazon Prime Video series titled “Carnival Row”.

Other Projects

Besides acting and modeling, she is a wonderful musician as well and taped 2 full albums of work under artist manager Simon Fuller. Though she declined the proposal of a record deal as her name would be changed under the deal.
