Early Life

Jo Koy was born on 2 June 1971 in Tacoma, Washington. His father, who was American, rooted in the United States Air Force in the Philippines after he tied the knot with his Filipino mother, who used to work as a manager for a Filipino rock band. 

When he was 13, his parents divorced and later he was brought up by his mother alone. Then, the family relocated to Tacoma Washington. After Koy completed his high school in Tacoma, the family again relocated to Las Vegas to stay beside his grandmother who was really ill.

He adopted his stage name from a nickname that he was given by his family while growing up. He credits his mother for his acting and comedic skills, he is often seen telling stories regarding her in his comedy shows.

Jo was encouraged by his mother to take part in school talent shows and to conduct unplanned shows for his family as well as friends.

He went to the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. Although, he decided to drop his studies so that he can pay full attention to his career in comedy. 

Personal Life

Jo tied the knot with Angie King and the duo welcomed their first child, a son, Joseph Herbert Jr. in 2003. The couple divorced later. In interviews, he mentioned that their divorce didn’t have any adverse impact on their co-parenting and they have done so cordially and continued to be close friends over the years.

He has revealed that he shares a really close bond with his son. After the separation, Jo chose to stay tight-lipped regarding his private life. In 2018, there were rumors of his engagement with Amy Bray and most recently, he has also been rumored to be in a relationship with actress and singer Tia Carrere.

He is also well known for his charity work. In 2009, Jo held his first philanthropic event with his own The Jo Koy Foundation. It was a charity stand-up comedy show named “Hilarity for Charity” that featured Koy alongside many surprise appearances from comedic guests.

The show was held at the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club in the heart of Citywalk, University City, California. Joe donated the entire proceeds from the ticket sales to The Children’s Hospital of Orange County.

Career

In the mid-90s. Jo started performing stand-up in Las Vegas and began to be noticed when he started performing quite often in the show called “Catch a Rising Star” at the MGM Grand and this led him to relocate to Los Angeles. 

Following his performance at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Koy rented the Huntridge Theater and visited door to door in order to sell tickets for his own comedy shows. Later, he received an invitation to appear on BET’s “Comic View” and since then, he won several comedy awards and also appeared on several prominent tours and programs.

Jo made appearances on two seasons of “Comic View.” He also starred in several TV stand-up specials such as “Jamie Foxx Presents: Laffapalooza!”. He won the Showtime at the Apollo and also made appearances on a number of VH1 episodes of the shows called “I Love the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s.”

Jo was a frequent guest commentator on “Chelsea Lately” and appeared on more than 100 episodes as a season regular roundtable guest. He was among those few comedians who received a standing ovation following he performed on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”.

He has also been a regular guest on “The Adam Carolla Show” and carries out his own podcast called “The Koy Pond”, on PodcastOne. Jo made appearances on the Tru TV show titled “World’s Dumbest” and “New Millenium.”

He was invited a second time to the Montreal comedy festival “Just for Laughs” where he gathered the Canadian Gemini Award. He has also been part of Carlos Mencia’s Punisher Tour and performed stand-up in front of fans filling 10,000-seat arenas and stadiums throughout the country.

On July 23, 2012, he started a podcast alongside comedian and TV host Michael Yo called “The Michael Yo and Jo Koy Show.” He still continues to tour throughout the country and can be appeared as a weekly guest on the podcast called “The Adam Carolla Show.”

He gave his 2 highly rated and hit comedy specials for Comedy Central called “Don’t Make Him Angry” and “Lights Out” and his next comedy special, a Netflix Original called “Jo Koy: Life from Seattle” was kicked off on 28 March 2017 across the world.

Jo dropped his next Netflix special called “Joy Koy: Comin’ In Hot” in June 2019. He gave two performances in February 2019 on stage at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen Colorado for the closing night of the Aspen Laugh Festival.

Jo partnered with Netflix to release his next comedy special called “Jo Koy: In His Elements” on June 12, 2020, which featured Filipino American comedians, DJs, and the B-Boys.
