What Is the Net Worth of Dave Grohl?

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Dave Grohl has an estimated net worth of $320 million as of 2022. He gained popularity as a guitarist and drummer as well.

Early Life

Dave Grohl was born in Warren, Ohio on January 14, 1969. He is the child of James Harper Grohl and Virginia Jean and he also has an older sister, Lisa. His father was an award-winning journalist whereas his mother was a school teacher.

Apart from being a newswriter, Grohl’s father was also the special assistant to Senator Robert Taft Jr. Dave’s family relocated to Springfield, Virginia when he was a child and his parents divorced when he was just 7 and after that, his mother brought him up.

He started taking guitar lessons when he was twelve and after getting tired of lessons, he apparently started to play in bands with friends.

He himself stated “I was going in the direction of faster, louder, darker while my sister, Lisa, three years older, was getting seriously into new wave territory. We’d meet in the middle sometimes with Bowie and Siouxsie and the Banshees.”

In 1982, his first concert happened in Chicago, at The Cubby Bear, Naked Raygun. He went to Thomas Jefferson High School in Virginia and was later transferred to Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria as a consequence of his consumption of cannabis which was affecting his grades negatively.

He was again transferred to Annandale High School and when he was in high school, he used to play for many local bands during this time only he learned to play drums himself. He learned to play drums just by listening to Rush and pink rock.

Personal Life

In 1994, Grohl got married to a photographer from Grosse Pointe, Michigan, Jennifer Leigh Youngblood. The couple announced their separation in December 1996 and subsequently they got officially divorced in 1997.

Groh then got married to Jordyn Blum on August 2, 2003, and the duo stay in Los Angeles and are also the parents of three beautiful kids named Violet Maye, Harper Willow, and Ophelia Saint.

He was named the third richest drummer in the world by a 2012 Stereogum article after Ringo Starr and Phil Collins, with a fortune of $260 million.

In a 2011 interview, he stated that he was becoming deaf in his left ear because of performing on stage for decades. In February 2022, when he appeared on The Howard Stern Show, he revealed that he is suffering from hearing loss which is having an effect on him, both in his regular life as well as as a musician also.

For nearly 2 decades, his tinnitus has been compelling him to read lips, and the situation has even worsened as the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has compelled people to wear masks.

Dave Grohl

Coming to producing music, “he refuses to use earpiece monitors, which can protect his ears because it removes him from the natural atmosphere sound so he cannot hear his bandmates”.

Dave’s ears “are still tuned in to certain frequencies, meaning he’s still able to pick up on minute sonic details — even down to the slightest differences between cymbal crashes”.

Career

At the age of seventeen, Grohl auditioned to become the drummer for the well-known local Washington, D.C. punk rock band Scream and he even lied regarding his age just to get the opportunity to audition and it became a surprise for him when he actually got the job.

During his junior years, Grohl dropped out of high school. He went on tour with the band and also recorded two studio albums and a few live albums as well. While playing drums for Scream, he became friends with Buzz Osborne from the Melvins.

One night, Osbourn had taken out his friends, Kurt Cobain and Kris Novoselic to see Scream and after a couple of months, Cobain and Novoselic’s band Nirvana was in search of a new drummer during the same time Scream broke up.

Later, Osbourne informed Grohl that Nirvana needed a drummer and shared the contact numbers of Cobain and Novoselic with him. Grohl was then asked to come to Seattle to audition for the band and the rest didn’t need any introduction.

In 1991, the band headed off to Sound City Studios in Los Angeles to record “Nevermind” and it surpassed all the expectations and was a commercial success across the world after it came out in the same year.

In 1994, after the demise of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana’s end as well, Grohl spent six days recording music on his own in an attempt to overcome the loss and pain. He used all of the instruments on the songs and recorded them himself. And when he was done, he produced 100 cassette tapes and gave them out to friends.

He was not interested in mentioning his name on those tracks, that’s why he decided on the name Foo Fighters. From those tapes, one landed in the hands of a record executive at Capital Records who then signed Grohl on the spot believing that the tracks were made by a full band.

In such a way, the Foo Fighters came into existence and have continued to taste an extremely successful career in music. He has released nine studio albums with Foo Fighters to date. Tens of millions of albums have been sold by the band across the world and also became the recipient of many Grammy awards.

Dave has also appeared as a guest for bands such as Queens of the Stone Age and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

In addition to that, Grohl has been part of several other projects, working with music artists like Tenacious D, Killing Joke, Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, and Paul McCartney. In spite of being one of the most successful musicians of all time, he is typically known to be one of the nicest and most down-to-earth celebrities worldwide.

It was disclosed in July 2009 that he was recording with Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme and John Paul Jones as Them Crooked Vultures. On August 9, 2009, the trio performed their first show together, at Metro in Chicago.

On August 26, 2009, the band played their first UK gig with a surprise appearance at Brixton Academy in London. During the fall of 2009, the first album of the band was released titled Them Crooked Vultures.

Since 1992, Grohl has made appearances as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live 13 times which is more than any other musician.

Dave produced and made his directorial debut in 2013 with a documentary regarding the history of the legendary recording studio Sound City in Van Nuys, California.

The next year, he served as the director of the HBO documentary miniseries titled Sonic Highways. It is linked to the eighth studio album of Foo Fighter.

He explained the project as “a love letter to the history of American music.” Every episode is featured as an exploration of the musical history of a distinctly American city via a sequence of interviews by Grohl.

At the start of 2020, he revealed that he was shooting for a new documentary adapted from bands’ van tours. It is estimated to be named “What Drives Us,” and in it, Grohl explores the mindset that binds musicians to leave behind everything and spend many months touring the country in a tiny van.

Controversies

Whilst on tour with Foo Fighters in Australia, in 2000, Australian police arrested Grohl when he was riding a scooter after consuming alcohol after a concert on the Gold Coast in Queensland.

He was fined $400 and had his Australian driving license canceled for a period of 3 months. After the incident, he said, “So, people, I guess if there’s anything to learn here, it’s: don’t drive after a few beers, even if you feel entirely capable like I did.”
