Without a doubt, Cruel Summer is cruel to the majority of its characters, but the same cannot be said of Freeform, which announced season two’s arrival even before season one’s conclusion aired.
Freeform President Tara Duncan told TVLine that the renewal was an “easy choice,” which makes sense given that Cruel Summer has been the network’s most-watched series ever (via Deadline).
However, major changes are imminent, not just because Cruel Summer writer Bert V Royal has formally resigned as showrunner.

Cruel Summer season 2 Release date
According to executive producer Jessica Biel, cruel Summer will return with fresh episodes in 2022 (yes, that Jessica Biel). While no official release date has been announced, we wouldn’t be shocked if season two follows the same timeline as the first chapter, which would mean we might be returning to Skylin as early as April 2022.
Cruel Summer season 2 Cast
If season two does continue the plot, we may anticipate the return of the majority of the key characters, including:
- Olivia Holt as Kate Wallis
- Chiara Aurelia as Jeanette Turner
- Froy Gutierrez as Jamie Henson
- Harley Quinn Smith as Mallory Higgins

Blake Lee is the only question mark in that cast, as Martin Harris died in the first episode, only to reappear in flashbacks. Given the severity of Kate’s trauma, her abuser may reappear in more flashbacks or possibly in her memory during season two.
Of course, none of this matters if the powers that be decide to tell a completely different tale.
Cruel Summer season 2 Plot
Assuming that season two resumes up where the finale left off, the repercussions of that twist will undoubtedly be felt in the coming episodes. Is Jeanette suffering from mental illness? Will the guilt of abandoning Kate in that basement ever sink in? And will Kate ever discover the truth?
These are just a few of the numerous topics that season two may begin to address, not to mention the future of Kate and Mallory’s relationship.
Tia Napolitano, showrunner, told Decider about the surprising finale: “We were already filming when we came up with that last twist, which I believe elevates it to the next level.”
When discussing Jeanette’s deceit, Napolitano stated, “What’s fascinating is that Jeanette never lies technically.” ‘I did not see Kate Wallis,’ she states.
“She failed to notice her.” She was aware of her. That, I believe, is an amusing line inside Jeanette’s craziness. She presumably believes she is being truthful – she never saw Kate Wallis in the basement.” “We were unaware of it for a long time,” she said.
“We lay out the season that we did from the beginning, from when I joined the project, there would be some misunderstanding between Kate and Jeanette about what happened in that home,” she explained. We speculated on what that was.
“Again, we continued improving it. And then we added the Mallory twist. We were already filming — I believe it was Episode 4 — when we came up with that last twist, which elevates it to a new level.”
According to Napolitano, the film’s suspenseful conclusion startled even the actors and crew.
“We watched Episode 10 with a large contingent of the cast, and Michelle Purple of Iron Ocean (Productions) expressed her reaction to the footage of the cast seeing the closing moment.
“Some individuals, like Sarah Drew, had no clue what would transpire. Naturally, I knew what would happen, and they were shouting. I’m sobbing with pride at the response.”

However, it is unknown if the second season will go deeper into this deception and betrayal. According to Deadline’s first report on the renewal, Season two may “include a fresh plot with the same actors or, in anthology fashion, employ the device of two points of view with numerous timeframes and a new group.”
