Early Life
Madden was born and raised in Elderslie, Renfrewshire, Scotland on June 18, 1986. His father worked as a firefighter whereas his mother is a primary school teacher and he also has two sisters. When he was 11, he landed his first-ever role as young Andy in a film adaptation of Iain Banks’s Complicity, which came out in 2000.
After that, he appeared to play the lead role of Sebastian in the children’s TV show titled Barmy Aunt Boomerang, which premiered from 1999 to 2000. Apart from being shy, he also went through insecurities about himself when he was a child. Later, he said that he was also bullied, mainly when he used to attend high school, which he showcased in the role that he played in Complicity.
He went to the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, previously the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, in Glasgow and graduated in 2007. While studying, he worked with The Arches and the Glasgow Repertory Company and performed in Franz Xaver Kroetz’s play Tom Fool at the Citizens Theatre.
After receiving appreciation for his performance, the Tom Fool production moved to London, and they’re a team from Shakespeare’s Globe spotted him. During his final year at the conservatoire, he landed in the play Romeo and Juliet at the modern Globe Theatre in London to portray Romeo, and that was followed by a tour of the production in the summer of 2007.
Susan Elkin of The Stage found the actor’s performance as Romeo “gravelly Glaswegian” and “almost childlike” in her review. That year, he also portrayed Callum McGregor in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Malorie Blackman’s Noughts & Crosses, which ran from December 2007 to February 2008.

Later, in 2009, he landed in the National Theatre of Scotland’s production of the play Be Near Me to portray Mark McNulty, which The Times’s Benedict Nightingale referred to as a “skillful adaptation” of the Andrew O’Hagan novel of the same name.
After that, in the same year, he landed in the BBC comedy-drama series titled Hope Springs to play the lead role of Dean McKenzie and he later appeared in his respective roles as Ripley and Theatre of Hate singer Kirk Brandon in the 2010 movies titled Chatroom and Worried About the Boy.

Madden was named on the Time 100 in 2019, an annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world drafted by Time magazine. The same year, he was also honored with the GQ Men of the Year Award for Hugo Boss Most Stylish Man.
Madden articulated pride in hailing from a working-class background in an interview with British Vogue and stated that his social principles are influenced by education discrimination and not having enough creative opportunities for working-class kids in schools. As of May 2019, he divides his time between his house in London and Angeles.
He received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in July 2019. In a New York Times interview, when he was questioned about his personal life after rumors spread about his relationships and s*exuality, he responded saying “I just keep my personal life personal.”
Career
Madden made his debut with the HBO fantasy drama series titled Game of Thrones where he portrayed Robb Stark, which ran from 2011 to 2013 and was adapted from the series of George R. R. Martin’s novels titled A Song of Ice and Fire. He rose to fame with his portrayal of Stark. Later, he opened up about being broke and even thinking of moving back with his parents before he landed this role.
During 2011 and 2013, he also landed the cast of the Channel 4 comedy-drama show Sirens and the BBC’s Birdsong. His 2014 miniseries titled Klondike brought him his first-ever Screen Actors Guild (SAG) card, for his portrayal of Bill Haskell, a real-life adventurer who took part in the Klondike Gold Rush.
He then appeared in the 2015 romantic fantasy film Cinderella, in which he portrayed Prince Kit. It is a live-action adaptation of the anime movie of the same title. Though he was worried about portraying a classical fairy tale character, he eventually became comfortable with how the viewers knew very little about the prince in the anime movie and how he became capable of creating “a real young man.” The movie became successful and earned more than $542 million.

Madden starred as an American pickpocket in the 2016 thriller film titled Bastille Day. He portrayed the lead role of Cosimo de’ Medici, in season one of the Italian-British television show titled Medici, subtitled Masters of Florence, which premiered in the same year. Madden landed in the first episode of 2017’s Electric Dreams.
An anthology series adapted from Philip K. Dick’s works. He then portrayed a DJ in the Netflix rom-com movie titled Ibiza, expressing the character with bits of goofiness and loneliness. His role in the 2018 BBC thriller series titled Bodyguard in which he portrayed Sergeant David Budd, a war veteran and a police officer with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) received praise as well as recognition.
In order to frame a complex and intricate portrayal of the disorder, he even spoke to members of the armed forces who went through that phase of PTSD. Tim Goodman of The Hollywood Reporter penned that the actor performed the character with self-possession, whilst The Atlantic’s Sophie Gilbert noticed that he represented Budd’s “superb instincts, his cool head under fire, and his complex psyche” successfully.
After the series finale became the highest-viewed UK television series episode since the start of current records, Bodyguard was officially kicked off worldwide by Netflix in October 2018. His performance brought him the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Drama.
He played the role of music manager John Reid in the 2019 Elton John biopic Rocketman, which kicked off in May, and then landed on the cast of Sam Mendes’ war film 1917 in which he portrayed a World War I soldier that kicked off in December. Both movies gathered positive reviews and were successful at the box office. From December 2020 to January 2021, he appeared in the sci-fi podcast From Now, voicing a survivor of a spaceship that gets back 35 years later vanishing.
