Her father was of Filipino descent whereas her mother was of Native Hawaiian, Ukrainian and Polish descent. Her father left the family when she was just 2 years old and then her mother got married to Gary Scherzinger, who adopted Nicole, and eventually, she took his surname. She has a sibling, a younger sister, Keala.

When she was 6, they relocated to Louisville, Kentucky and her mother started working as a clerk there whereas her step-father worked as a welder.

She calls her upbringing tough since she was raised “without much money” and used to work as a waitress to support her parents financially, she also took modeling assignments and was also a part of an entertainment group of the local amusement park, Kentucky Kingdom.

When she was 14, she went to the Actors Theatre of Louisville, and there she landed her first professional play titled La Bête. In 1996, she completed her graduation from the Youth Performing Arts School (YPAS) at Dupont Manual High School, and she took part in several plays, alongside Alice in Wonderland, in which she played Alice.

She was shocked she was booked since she was “up against a girl with blue eyes and blonde hair.” Scherzinger was enrolled in DuPont Manual Alumni’s Hall of Fame as one of the youngest inductees in 2007.

She has endowed YPAS with $2,000 per year, a namesake scholarship since 2013. Following her getting a scholarship, she went to attend Wright State University and majored in theatre arts and minor in dance.

During this time, she landed the lead roles in regional productions of the musicals Chicago, Guys and Dolls, and Show Boat. When she was in her final year of college, Days of the New band leader Travis Meeks hired her to contribute vocals on their self-titled second studio album.

Meeks wanted a singer who was able to “deliver some more world/operatic textures and sounds.” She later dropped out of college because of the album’s supporting tour. Towards the end of the tour, Meeks said that the two drifted apart creatively, saying that she “didn’t seem to understand music very well” but said she is an “amazing entertainer.”
